Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Our criminal justice program promotes state-of-the-art research and instruction in subject areas that are crucial to the effective and orderly working of modern society.

You will learn theories of and responses to social deviance, law and the legal system, administration theory and evaluation, law enforcement, juvenile justice systems and procedures, and crime prevention models. You will also be able to attend numerous conferences and lectures to broaden your professional perspective.

As a criminal justice major, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience that will add to your educational experience. You can gain additional experience by participating in the Campus Patrol Office program, which offers students who qualify an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an employee of the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety. Tourism management majors combine studies in the liberal arts with studies in statistics, accounting, marketing, economics, human resources, service management, finance and information technology, as well as club, hotel and tourism management.

As a tourism management major, you will be involved in field studies, group projects, computer simulations and event and festival planning. The major also offers one of only two Club Management Association of America-certified programs, or you can choose to concentrate in meeting and events. Students wishing to pursue the concentration in club management are required to complete 15 credit hours including club management, club cuisine and service, and advanced club management and a hospitality and tourism internship.

A minimum of two required internships can take tourism management majors to locales from coast to coast and all places in between, with an emphasis on honing your management skills. In addition to internships, you can take advantage of numerous clubs, volunteer opportunities and tourism-related study abroad experiences.

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary program highly focused on the improvement of human health, combining the innovative skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve health care from diagnostics to treatment.

As a biomedical engineering major, you will develop the ability to identify, formulate and solve open-ended problems at the interface of engineering and medicine using skills acquired in mathematics; biological, chemical and physical sciences; and engineering. You will also learn how to communicate technical material, function on a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility, continue along a path of lifelong learning, and recognize economic, social and global issues related to the profession.

Economics majors in the College of Arts and Sciences may earn the B.S. by completing the 24-hour major requirement along with the college core, distribution requirements and cultural-awareness and writing-emphasis requirements as described in the basic degree requirements in liberal arts.

In addition to courses within your major, students in the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill a cognate or minor. The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major, and it must consist of 12 hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of but related to, the major. In place of the cognate, B.A. students can choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of prescribed courses.

The Bachelor of Science in Music Industry Studies is designed for students who want to major in music while receiving a broad, liberal arts education. No audition is required for this major, making it the perfect choice for students who desire a career in music but may lack traditional training. A large part of the degree is based on experiential learning, with students engaging with professionals via guest lectures, interactive job site visits and shadowing, and internships.

Students must satisfy all general education requirements as specified in the chosen degree. These requirements are designed to give students broad experience in liberal arts and sciences and opportunities to develop intellectual skills in analysis and evaluation, as well as competence in written and oral communication. Course work also includes a basic education in music, along with courses in recording sciences, live event promotions and production, marketing and entrepreneurship.
