Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

Undergraduate Academic Accelerator Pathway (2-Term) - Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering
Our aerospace engineering program provides a strong foundation in engineering science and engineering design as applied to aerospace materials and structures, including their mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics and behaviors. In addition to taking engineering courses, you will work in project groups, acquiring social skills to work in multi-disciplinary environments and learning how to present your work effectively. Through the design and lab work, you’ll gain hands-on, real life experience that will shape you into responsible and innovative aerospace engineers.

Undergraduate Extended Accelerator Pathway (3-Term) - Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications — Public Relations
As a public relations major, you will develop strong writing and account management skills through interactive classes and extensive writing assignments. You'll learn how to create campaigns, write press releases and manage events as you develop your public relations acumen. You will work collaboratively with your classmates and be encouraged to participate activities like The Carolina Agency, our student-run advertising and public relations agency. You also have the opportunity to earn academic credit by participating in supervised internships. And as a senior in your capstone experience, you will create a comprehensive public relations campaign for an actual client. Undergraduate Academic Accelerator Pathway (2-Term) - Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary program highly focused on the improvement of human health, combining the innovative skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve health care from diagnostics to treatment.
As a biomedical engineering major, you will develop the ability to identify, formulate and solve open-ended problems at the interface of engineering and medicine using skills acquired in mathematics; biological, chemical and physical sciences; and engineering. You will also learn how to communicate technical material, function on a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility, continue along a path of lifelong learning, and recognize economic, social and global issues related to the profession.
You will enjoy courses with hands-on laboratory components as well as a senior capstone design sequence, during which you will work on problems defined by doctors or biomedical engineering industries. You will also be encouraged to get involved with research opportunities.

Emphasizing the interdisciplinary pursuit of comparative and/or international politics, the international studies program is designed to create the leaders of tomorrow. We allow students to tailor their programs of study to focus on such topics as foreign policy, global economic or environmental studies, or international conflict and cooperation.
As an international studies major, you will gain an understanding about how politics, government and governance shape the world and the quality of citizenship in the world. You will benefit from outstanding faculty members and challenging coursework that will help you develop critical learning skills, especially as related to the study of politics.
You will be able to focus on one or two fields within international studies, such as international security, international economics, U.S. foreign policy, global environmental politics, international human rights, Latin American studies, European studies, African studies, Asian studies and international development. You will also complete a public service internship to gain hands-on experience.

As a mathematics major, you will also develop widely sought-after skills, such as the ability to logically and critically evaluate situations including developing and implementing effective problem-solving strategies involving a wide range of ideas and data. You will enjoy relatively small classes with increased interaction with your professors.
We encourage you to take advantage of the Mathematics Library and the Hedberg Student Lounge, complete with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and chalkboard — perfect for studying in groups.
You will choose an area of emphasis from actuarial, education, applied or general. Additionally, the department’s list of Knowles Science Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics recipients is growing very rapidly. These national awards provide funding for the completion of the student’s education as well as the first few years of teaching.

Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. By participating in one of the most popular majors at the university, you can explore the theoretical and practical aspects of psychology.
As a psychology major, you will benefit from challenging courses led by outstanding faculty members. You may also work with a faculty mentor and explore a variety of research opportunities in the department. Research is generally divided into the areas of cognitive and neural sciences, clinical-community psychology, school psychology and quantitative psychology. You can work with children, adolescents, adults or animals studying phenomena such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, behavioral interventions, decision-making, drugs of abuse, fetal alcohol syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases, cultural aspects of health, physical activity and other aspects of mental health. Undergraduate Extended Accelerator Pathway (3-Term) - Bachelor of Science in Anthropology
As a geography major, you will take courses in computer cartography, GIS and air photo interpretation/remote sensing. You will also have ample opportunities to study the Earth’s physical features and processes and how this physical environment is modified by human activities. Students may choose to take courses that include the real-world collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of geographic data to prepare you for careers in geography.
Geography undergraduate students may choose one of four tracks to focus on: physical/environmental geography, human/economic geography, geographic information science and general geography.
