A department in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry focuses on training professional chemists and providing a base degree for advanced study in medicine, pharmacy and other professional schools. Our electrical engineering graduate program is nationally recognized in areas like communication and electromagnetics, decision and control, electronic materials and devices, and power and energy systems. As an electrical engineering graduate student, you can work in outstanding labs and facilities at UofSC.

A graduate degree in electrical engineering can improve your career by equipping you to work on advanced projects or enabling you to transition to a new career in research or teaching.  Electrical Engineering at UofSC has advanced facilities, labs, computing and simulation infrastructure to allow students to carry out research activities.

We offer paid research assistantships and tuition for full-time Ph.D. students. Prospective students may also apply and receive national or international fellowships like the NSF Graduate Fellowship, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, or fellowships from international entities and governments to support their Ph.D. program of study. M.S. students may also apply and receive very limited teaching assistantships or research assistantships, depending on the availability of funds. M.E. students are normally self-supported or supported by their governments, employers, or sponsors.

As a geography major, you will take courses in computer cartography, GIS and air photo interpretation/remote sensing. You will also have ample opportunities to study the Earth’s physical features and processes and how this physical environment is modified by human activities. Students may choose to take courses that include the real-world collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of geographic data to prepare you for careers in geography.

As a geological sciences major, laboratory experience and field-based activities will enhance the vibrant and friendly academic environment. You will focus on the study of the Earth's dynamics and history, as well as its composition and the chemical, physical and biological changes that it undergoes. You can also choose to pursue a concentration in environmental geosciences.

The department offers a broad range of specialties within geosciences such as sedimentology, stratigraphy and basin evolution; tectonics and structural geology; environmental geology and hydrogeology; igneous and metamorphic petrology; geophysics and seismology; oceanography, coastal and estuarine processes; paleoecology; and paleoclimatology.

You will also have the unique opportunity to complete a four-week field course in Colorado to get valuable hands-on experience. This opportunity synergizes your education in geology to understanding the Earth's formation in an observational setting.

• Graduates of the program will have an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
• Graduates of the program will have an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Aerospace engineering graduate degrees include the Master of Engineering (M.E.), which is perceived to be more practically oriented, and the Master of Science (M.S.), which is considered more scholarly or fundamental and includes a thesis.

Programs of study for both the M.S. and M.E. in Aerospace Engineering include coursework in five core areas:

• Aeroelasticity
• Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics
• Aerospace Structures
• Composite Materials
• Finite Element Analysis

Additional electives allow students to concentrate their studies in the mechanics, materials, and flight aspects of aerospace engineering.

As a marine science major, you will obtain interdisciplinary knowledge in marine science as well as core knowledge in an area of emphasis chosen from among biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, geological oceanography or coastal resource management and marine policy.
