The College of Engineering and Computing offers the South Carolina's only aerospace engineering program, including a Master of Engineering (M.E.) and Masters of Science (M.S.) in Aerospace Engineering.

Graduate study in aerospace engineering affords the opportunity to enhance critical thinking and mathematical prowess, skills that are transferable to career advancement in research, design and application work environments. Plus, those with graduate degrees in aerospace engineering generally have a higher income than those with just an undergraduate engineering degree.

Aerospace engineering graduate degrees include the Master of Engineering (M.E.), which is perceived to be more practically oriented, and the Master of Science (M.S.), which is considered more scholarly or fundamental and includes a thesis.

Programs of study for both the M.S. and M.E. in Aerospace Engineering include coursework in five core areas:

• Aeroelasticity
• Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics
• Aerospace Structures
• Composite Materials
• Finite Element Analysis

Additional electives allow students to concentrate their studies in the mechanics, materials, and flight aspects of aerospace engineering.

The bachelor's in music is designed for students who want to major in music while receiving a broad, liberal arts education. B.A. students will select a cognate (12 credits) or minor area (18 credits) outside the School of Music to prepare for a variety of careers that may be interdisciplinary in nature.

Students must satisfy all general education requirements as specified in the chosen degree. These requirements are designed to give students broad experience in liberal arts and sciences and opportunities to develop intellectual skills in analysis and evaluation, as well as competence in written and oral communication. 

Students pursuing the statistics major take challenging courses with nationally recognized faculty members and pursue the internship and research opportunities that keep statisticians in high demand. As a statistics major, you will develop the ability to perform fundamental statistical analyses, prepare informative graphics for public presentation and use statistical programming languages with applications across a variety of fields.

There are three options under the bachelor's degree with a major in statistics program. You can pursue the general major, the major with emphasis in actuarial mathematics and statistics, or the intensive major. The major with emphasis in actuarial mathematics and statistics is designed for students planning a career as an actuary, while the intensive major is designed for students planning on graduate study in statistics.

The department's 15 faculty members are well-known for teaching and research excellence. As a statistics major, you can also benefit from the university's Center of Reliability and Quality Sciences, where faculty members and students conduct research projects on and off campus. You can also seek out internship opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the field.

Students at the University of South Carolina are living in an increasingly globalized context in which economic, social, environmental, and cultural transformations in one part of the world can affect all others.  The State of South Carolina leads the nation in per capita foreign direct investment.  The ability to comprehend and communicate in diverse languages not only prepares our students to understand the history and traditions of our own culture, it also equips them to be active and engaged representatives of the state in the global economy and world affairs. The ability to communicate in a foreign language has been shown to correlate directly with career success by a variety of empirical studies. The major in languages, with its multiple and flexible tracks, is vital for the preparation of the next generation of South Carolina citizens and leaders.

A key factor separating successful firms from less-profitable competitors is how each manages its human resources. Human resources plays a central role in all of the major challenges facing businesses today.

The management department offers an undergraduate concentration in human resources as well as a broad range of courses in areas ranging from strategic management to business communications. Students are exposed to a unique blend of classroom and applied experiential learning opportunities to prepare them for work in the modern economy. We also offer a wide range of both required and elective courses in areas such as entrepreneurship, leadership, consulting and organizational development, human resources, talent analytics and strategic management.

Finance involves the study of business finance, investments and financial institutions. Students can specialize in corporate finance, investments or financial services.

The Finance Department in the Darla Moore School of Business is composed of outstanding faculty members and researchers whose interests include areas such as bank management, corporate restructuring, investment management, risk management, employee benefits and real estate finance. You will benefit from cutting-edge business knowledge and develop a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. Through field trips to leading industries, service-learning opportunities and internships, you will be able to gain hands-on experience in the field.

A department in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry focuses on training professional chemists and providing a base degree for advanced study in medicine, pharmacy and other professional schools. The department places an emphasis on undergraduate research and has outstanding faculty members.

The following courses fulfill some of the requirements for a bachelor's degree with a major in biochemistry and molecular biology:

Economics majors in the College of Arts and Sciences may earn the B.S. by completing the 24-hour major requirement along with the college core, distribution requirements and cultural-awareness and writing-emphasis requirements as described in the basic degree requirements in liberal arts.

In addition to courses within your major, students in the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill a cognate or minor. The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major, and it must consist of 12 hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of but related to, the major. In place of the cognate, B.A. students can choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of prescribed courses.

The Film and Media Studies program is devoted to the critical study of moving images. The program offers unique opportunities that include production collaboration with Media Arts, and engagement with the remarkable film and television archival content of Moving Image Research Collections, which has grown to an estimated 6,000 hours of material.

In this program, you'll learn how to:

• Analyze persuasively moving image media (including their sounds)
• Research histories of  about the international production, distribution and reception
• Map media industries globally and describe their functions
• Defend your own explanation of media’s power in everyday life.

Social work is a helping profession. The main goal of social work is to improve a society's overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Our students learn to work with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and organizations to empower them to meet their needs.

As a social work major, you can expect to develop skills in community organizing, diversity, social justice, networking, interviewing, multitasking, case management and grant-writing. You will also be able to gain hands-on experience in the field through service-learning that is integrated into academic coursework. You may also choose to pursue the Child Welfare Certificate and become certified in child welfare and receive a fellowship from the Department of Social Services.
