Students at the University of South Carolina are living in an increasingly globalized context in which economic, social, environmental, and cultural transformations in one part of the world can affect all others.  The State of South Carolina leads the nation in per capita foreign direct investment.  The ability to comprehend and communicate in diverse languages not only prepares our students to understand the history and traditions of our own culture, it also equips them to be active and engaged representatives of the state in the global economy and world affairs. The ability to communicate in a foreign language has been shown to correlate directly with career success by a variety of empirical studies. The major in languages, with its multiple and flexible tracks, is vital for the preparation of the next generation of South Carolina citizens and leaders.

Operations and supply chain explores the analytical use of information in business management, and is distinguished by the opportunity for students to receive Lean Six Sigma green-belt certification.

The Operations and Supply Chain program at the Darla Moore School of Business pairs a robust classroom environment and real-world, experiential learning to provide students with the skills to systematically analyze data and improve business processes.

What makes our program stand out from the rest is the opportunity for our students to get the actual Lean Six Sigma green-belt certification from the industry through a rigorous coverage of Lean Six Sigma approach to supply chain and operations management, a formal written green-belt exam from Sonoco (a $4 billion global manufacturing company based in Hartsville, S.C.) and completion of a major certified project in one of our center partner firms to meet the project requirement for green-belt certification. There is no other program that provides such a rich opportunity in Lean Six Sigma certification from industry to its undergraduate students in business.

As a mathematics major, you will also develop widely sought-after skills, such as the ability to logically and critically evaluate situations including developing and implementing effective problem-solving strategies involving a wide range of ideas and data. You will enjoy relatively small classes with increased interaction with your professors.

We encourage you to take advantage of the Mathematics Library and the Hedberg Student Lounge, complete with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and chalkboard — perfect for studying in groups.

You will choose an area of emphasis from actuarial, education, applied or general. Additionally, the department’s list of Knowles Science Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics recipients is growing very rapidly. These national awards provide funding for the completion of the student’s education as well as the first few years of teaching.

As an anthropology major, you will gain knowledge in four areas: cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology and biological anthropology. You will experience intensive discussion, multimedia engagement and hands-on applications in many classes, while acquiring skills in research methodology and presentation. Anthropology majors also have the opportunity to participate in research and fieldwork, both abroad and locally.

You will develop skills necessary to appreciate the cultural and biological diversity of humans, while learning how to apply this knowledge in a variety of ways. Many unique opportunities await you, such as getting involved with a field school offered each summer in archaeology and ethnology.

Around the world, people and places are intimately linked. Our flexible, interdisciplinary program is designed to engage students in pressing global questions, allowing you to develop a deeper understanding of the complex relationships and processes that connect the global community.

As a global studies major, you will focus on themes relating to globalization while learning to appreciate the world’s diversity. To achieve this end, this major requires students to focus on a particular world region and to attain proficiency in a modern foreign language.

Students in the Global Studies Program will focus on one of four themes: global health, global conflict and security, global sustainability and development, and global cultures. These themes, along with the major components around which the degree program is structured, will prepare students for careers where an understanding of urgent global issues is required, and where an ability to work with people from a variety of cultures is indispensable.

As the largest art department in the state, our art studio provides you with a wide array of opportunities in concentrations such as ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

The art studio program offers students the opportunity to choose from two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio and the Bachelor of Fine Arts. The B.A. is a well-rounded liberal arts major that offers a solid foundation in multiple types of art and is ideal for students interested in double majoring. The B.F.A. is a pre-professional degree that allows students to focus in one of our seven concentration areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture (3D studies).

As an international business major, you will develop leading-edge knowledge concerning the practice of global business.  

The department emphasizes the understanding of cross-border relationships — both within the same organization and across multiple organizations — comprising the modern multinational enterprise, as well as the institutional, financial, sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts surrounding the enterprise. International business majors have the opportunity to concentrate on business in Chinese enterprise, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America or Central Europe.
