By building expertise in solid mechanics, materials processes, smart materials, manufacturing automation, concurrent engineering/design, sustainable design or thermofluid/energy sciences, students stand prepared to join the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries in South Carolina and beyond.

As a mechanical engineering major, you will have the opportunity to work with a professor in research on some of today’s most notable engineering challenges. You will develop skills that will give you the ability to solve many of today’s world problems. Mechanical engineering majors will choose a concentration from design and manufacturing, engineering materials, mechanics of solids, thermal and fluid systems, and nuclear engineering.

Students have the option to earn their master's degree in hospitality and tourism management on campus or via distance learning and at their own pace. Synchronous distance delivery using Adobe Connect provides remote students with an engaging, interactive classroom experience where they learn in real time with on-campus classmates and professors. Additional asynchronous course options give students the flexibility to complete courses online and at their convenience. 

Students at the University of South Carolina are living in an increasingly globalized context in which economic, social, environmental, and cultural transformations in one part of the world can affect all others.  The State of South Carolina leads the nation in per capita foreign direct investment.  The ability to comprehend and communicate in diverse languages not only prepares our students to understand the history and traditions of our own culture, it also equips them to be active and engaged representatives of the state in the global economy and world affairs. The ability to communicate in a foreign language has been shown to correlate directly with career success by a variety of empirical studies. The major in languages, with its multiple and flexible tracks, is vital for the preparation of the next generation of South Carolina citizens and leaders.

As a mathematics major, you will also develop widely sought-after skills, such as the ability to logically and critically evaluate situations including developing and implementing effective problem-solving strategies involving a wide range of ideas and data. You will enjoy relatively small classes with increased interaction with your professors.

We encourage you to take advantage of the Mathematics Library and the Hedberg Student Lounge, complete with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and chalkboard — perfect for studying in groups.

You will choose an area of emphasis from actuarial, education, applied or general. Additionally, the department’s list of Knowles Science Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics recipients is growing very rapidly. These national awards provide funding for the completion of the student’s education as well as the first few years of teaching.

The bachelor's in music is designed for students who want to major in music while receiving a broad, liberal arts education. B.A. students will select a cognate (12 credits) or minor area (18 credits) outside the School of Music to prepare for a variety of careers that may be interdisciplinary in nature.

Students must satisfy all general education requirements as specified in the chosen degree. These requirements are designed to give students broad experience in liberal arts and sciences and opportunities to develop intellectual skills in analysis and evaluation, as well as competence in written and oral communication. 

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary program highly focused on the improvement of human health, combining the innovative skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve health care from diagnostics to treatment.

As a biomedical engineering major, you will develop the ability to identify, formulate and solve open-ended problems at the interface of engineering and medicine using skills acquired in mathematics; biological, chemical and physical sciences; and engineering. You will also learn how to communicate technical material, function on a multidisciplinary team, demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility, continue along a path of lifelong learning, and recognize economic, social and global issues related to the profession.

You will enjoy courses with hands-on laboratory components as well as a senior capstone design sequence, during which you will work on problems defined by doctors or biomedical engineering industries. You will also be encouraged to get involved with research opportunities.

Our criminal justice program promotes state-of-the-art research and instruction in subject areas that are crucial to the effective and orderly working of modern society.

You will learn theories of and responses to social deviance, law and the legal system, administration theory and evaluation, law enforcement, juvenile justice systems and procedures, and crime prevention models. You will also be able to attend numerous conferences and lectures to broaden your professional perspective.

As a criminal justice major, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience that will add to your educational experience. You can gain additional experience by participating in the Campus Patrol Office program, which offers students who qualify an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an employee of the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety. The art studio program offers students the opportunity to choose from two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio and the Bachelor of Fine Arts. The B.A. is a well-rounded liberal arts major that offers a solid foundation in multiple types of art and is ideal for students interested in double majoring. The B.F.A. is a pre-professional degree that allows students to focus in one of our seven concentration areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture (3D studies).
