Overview

The foundation of the music theory program is a rigorous two-year undergraduate sequence that instructs all music majors and minors in written theory and aural skills.

Students have the opportunity to explore interests in related fields such as musicology, composition and computer music and to work closely with faculty mentors on undergraduate research projects.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The environmental sciences major was launched in fall 2009 as part of the environment and sustainability program. It is designed to give students a strong scientific background while allowing them the flexibility to choose courses that address their specific interests.

The major in languages, with its multiple and flexible tracks, is vital for the preparation of the next generation of citizens and leaders.

Undergraduate students who choose a language concentration will be able to demonstrate intermediate to advanced level proficiency in their target language(s). They will be able to evaluate and discuss literary and cultural texts, or linguistic documents, and advance arguments effectively through strong writing and research skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of the significance of the sociopolitical structures and intellectual and literary/artistic contributions of the target culture and language sphere. They'll also be able to recognize, describe and reflect upon the cultural practices that shape social interactions in the target culture. Students who choose a PK-12 teaching certification concentration will also be well-prepared to begin a career teaching their chosen language.

Tourism management majors combine studies in the liberal arts with studies in statistics, accounting, marketing, economics, human resources, service management, finance and information technology, as well as club, hotel and tourism management.

As a tourism management major, you will be involved in field studies, group projects, computer simulations and event and festival planning. The major also offers one of only two Club Management Association of America-certified programs, or you can choose to concentrate in meeting and events. Students wishing to pursue the concentration in club management are required to complete 15 credit hours including club management, club cuisine and service, and advanced club management and a hospitality and tourism internship.

A minimum of two required internships can take tourism management majors to locales from coast to coast and all places in between, with an emphasis on honing your management skills. In addition to internships, you can take advantage of numerous clubs, volunteer opportunities and tourism-related study abroad experiences.

  •  Majors will learn the importance of the principal movements, pivotal figures, and conceptual ideas that shape the academic study of African American experiences. Students will acquire the tools for contextualizing the dynamic realities of race in America and for analyzing their social, political, and cultural implications.
  •     Majors will work across academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to synthesize the multiple roots and routes of intellectual inquiry within African American Studies. Students will interpret primary and secondary source material using both individual and collaborative methods of study.
  •     Students will develop as scholars and researchers in African American Studies through effective oral, written, and aesthetic forms of communication. Assignments will emphasize the tasks of rigorous scholarship, including: critical thinking, creative expression, precise writing, constructive discussions, and standards of professional engagement.

Internationally recognized research projects and first-class instruction are the hallmarks of the biological sciences department.

You will develop a broad base of skills in chemistry, plant and animal science, cellular and molecular biology, ecology and evolution. You will experience lecture-style courses with supplemental laboratories to gain additional hands-on experience. You can also elect to get involved in field research and field classes.

In addition to the challenging standard curriculum, biological sciences majors have the opportunity to be exposed to an unusually strong core of marine sciences.

Natural Sciences & Mathematics

Bachelor of Science in Physics

Known for the strength of its research in both theoretical and experimental physics, the department’s research has a global impact. Its experimental nuclear and particle physics groups are involved in cutting-edge international collaborations in the U.S., Europe and the Far East. The theoretical groups in cosmology, quantum theory, nuclear physics and condensed matter are also internationally known. Our experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics groups have labs and projects based locally, some of which are associated with the S.C. SmartState Center focused on nanoscale physics research.

As a physics major, you will be exposed to challenging coursework that will give you a solid foundation in all of the central areas of physics, including Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, statistical physics and quantum mechanics. You will also have the opportunity to tailor the program to your own interests by choosing from specialized experimental courses or designing your own research program in consultation with our faculty researchers.

Bachelor of Arts in Dance

The Bachelor of Arts in Dance offers two concentrations (performance and choreography or dance education), and all students are required to actively participate in departmental productions.

The program is known for offering rigorous technical training while also providing opportunities for broad-based study in dance and beyond. Experience a world-class repertory, including historical dance works by George Balanchine, Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp, David Parsons, Lila York and Lynne Taylor Corbett, as well as original works by our eminent faculty. You will be exposed to dance techniques that include classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, musical theater and world dance.

Students focusing in dance education have multiple opportunities to participate in professional learning experiences in a variety of educational and community settings while completing their studies. By extending the classroom into the field, students participate in hands-on learning that prepares them for teaching dance to a variety of populations while earning K-12 certification in dance.
