Or perhaps instead, you see yourself delivering information through radio or television broadcasting. No matter the medium, your job is to find the truth and tell compelling stories that make a difference down the street and across the world.

Turn on any major network news channel and you'll see our graduates at work. ESPN, CNN, FOX, NBC, BET, CBS, ABC — it's an alphabet soup that spells out success. Flip on the television in New York, Philadelphia, Hong Kong, Charlotte, Atlanta, Amsterdam, Denver, Tampa and other major cities — we're there, too. You'll also be part of a powerful network that includes colleagues at National Geographic, the Harlem Globetrotters, NFL films and almost every television station in the Southeast. Social work is a helping profession. The main goal of social work is to improve a society's overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Our students learn to work with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and organizations to empower them to meet their needs.

As a social work major, you can expect to develop skills in community organizing, diversity, social justice, networking, interviewing, multitasking, case management and grant-writing. You will also be able to gain hands-on experience in the field through service-learning that is integrated into academic coursework. You may also choose to pursue the Child Welfare Certificate and become certified in child welfare and receive a fellowship from the Department of Social Services.

A department in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry focuses on training professional chemists and providing a base degree for advanced study in medicine, pharmacy and other professional schools. The department places an emphasis on undergraduate research and has outstanding faculty members.

Students graduating from the Advertising, B.A.J.M.C. program will be able to …

• Demonstrate the ability to conduct research, gather information, write clearly and correctly and present relevant news or persuasive information at a professional level.  
• Demonstrate the ability to think critically, creatively and independently  evaluate their own work and the work of others for accuracy, fairness, clarity, style and correctness.  
• Demonstrate an understanding the history of journalism and mass communications, the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communications and the role of journalism and mass communications in society.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical concepts, legal implications, considerations and practices that guide the mass media professions.  
• Demonstrate the ability to apply tools and technologies appropriate for the production, editing and presentation of visual, aural, textual or other media content.  
• Apply basic numerical and statistical concepts and methods appropriate for the communications professions. 

The Anthropology Department offers a general program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and a Research Track/Intensive Major leading to a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Anthropology and a Medical Anthropology Minor. Anthropology is a social science concerned with the study of humans within a broad context that includes the social and physical development of our species. The diverse discipline is divided into four main areas.

• Cultural Anthropology is concerned with the comparative analysis of different cultures.
• Archaeology is the science that studies past people and societies through their artifacts.
• Linguistic Anthropology involves the study of all forms of human systems of communication and how these systems mediate humans’ experience and engagement with the world.
• Biological Anthropology includes the study of the physical nature and development of human beings, behavior and anatomy of nonhuman primates, and human variations.

The environmental sciences major was launched in fall 2009 as part of the environment and sustainability program. It is designed to give students a strong scientific background while allowing them the flexibility to choose courses that address their specific interests.

The following courses fulfill some of the requirements for a bachelor of science with a major in environmental science:

• Ecology and Evolution (and laboratory)
• Surface and Near Surface Processes
• Weather and Climate
• Introduction to Environmental Engineering
• Concepts of Environmental Health Science

As a geological sciences major, laboratory experience and field-based activities will enhance the vibrant and friendly academic environment. You will focus on the study of the Earth's dynamics and history, as well as its composition and the chemical, physical and biological changes that it undergoes. You can also choose to pursue a concentration in environmental geosciences.

The department offers a broad range of specialties within geosciences such as sedimentology, stratigraphy and basin evolution; tectonics and structural geology; environmental geology and hydrogeology; igneous and metamorphic petrology; geophysics and seismology; oceanography, coastal and estuarine processes; paleoecology; and paleoclimatology.

You will also have the unique opportunity to complete a four-week field course in Colorado to get valuable hands-on experience. This opportunity synergizes your education in geology to understanding the Earth's formation in an observational setting.

We have the largest history department in South Carolina, offering the most comprehensive course of study in the state and one of the most competitive in the region and nation.

As a history major, through in-depth analysis of the evolution of social, economics, cultural-intellectual and political patterns and events, you’ll develop an understanding of and appreciation for the life and development of various cultures, institutions and civilizations. You will become an expert at answering the questions “Who are we, and how did we get here?” You will learn how to situate yourself in the long continuum of human experience and how to find meaning in the past.

The skills you develop as a history major will give you the capacity to make the voices, stories and events of the past come alive and to give shape to the experiences and processes that have defined the interaction of humans with each other and with the world around them.

A selected number of history majors or minors spend their junior or senior year (or a spring or fall semester) at the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, while maintaining their normal progress toward graduation. Warwick has the United Kingdom’s second-highest-ranked history department.

As a history major, through in-depth analysis of the evolution of social, economics, cultural-intellectual and political patterns and events, you’ll develop an understanding of and appreciation for the life and development of various cultures, institutions and civilizations. You will become an expert at answering the questions “Who are we, and how did we get here?” You will learn how to situate yourself in the long continuum of human experience and how to find meaning in the past.

Weekly composition seminars include analysis and discussion between students and guest composers, performers and conductors, open rehearsals and visits by artists from other disciplines. Students profit from frequent visits by noted guest composers.

You also benefit from our rich musical resources, including two advanced computer music studios and our extensive music library collection. You are encouraged to take advantage of the diverse resources throughout the university and to collaborate with artists in other fields.

At the end of each term, student composers present their work at the New Voices concert, open to the public. This student-produced concert series is designed to stimulate compositional activity and educate composers in practical matters of concert production, publicity and artistic collaboration.
