The University of South Carolina School of Music has established a national reputation for artistic and scholarly excellence. One of the school's newest offerings is a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in musical theatre, designed specifically for students interested in pursuing an outstanding liberal arts music degree with a specific focus on musical theatre.

Music students at South Carolina develop close working relationships with dedicated, world-class faculty members and have opportunities for collaborative learning and performing, in-depth research and travel.

At the School of Music, students benefit from our rich musical resources, including two advanced computer music studios, our extensive music library collection and our state-of-the-art recording studio. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the diverse resources throughout the university and to collaborate with artists in other fields.

As part of the process of building well-informed, flexible artists for the ever-changing industry, the musical theatre concentration immerses students in multiple performance opportunities each semester, involving both cutting-edge contemporary and classic genres of musical theatre. In lieu of a cognate or minor, students will complete 18 credit hours of dance and theatre courses, as well as Musical Theatre Workshop each semester. Students will participate in exciting offerings each year, including guest master classes with musical theatre professionals, collaborations with organizations and fully staged showcase performances each semester.

Social work is a helping profession. The main goal of social work is to improve a society's overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Our students learn to work with individuals, couples, families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and organizations to empower them to meet their needs.

As a social work major, you can expect to develop skills in community organizing, diversity, social justice, networking, interviewing, multitasking, case management and grant-writing. You will also be able to gain hands-on experience in the field through service-learning that is integrated into academic coursework. You may also choose to pursue the Child Welfare Certificate and become certified in child welfare and receive a fellowship from the Department of Social Services.

As an international business major, you will develop leading-edge knowledge concerning the practice of global business.  

The department emphasizes the understanding of cross-border relationships — both within the same organization and across multiple organizations — comprising the modern multinational enterprise, as well as the institutional, financial, sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts surrounding the enterprise. International business majors have the opportunity to concentrate on business in Chinese enterprise, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America or Central Europe.

As an international business major, you will benefit from challenging coursework, cutting-edge business knowledge and skills with a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. You will also gain global opportunities, cultural awareness and language appreciation. You will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through study abroad, service learning and internships.

The B.A. in Environmental Studies degree incorporates critical social, economic, policy, communications and/or humanities components that are not within the B.S. degree. The curriculum prepares students to address complex environmental problems requiring knowledge and understanding from multiple social and science disciplines that are framed in an environmental context. Students learn to make sound analyses and judgments about interdisciplinary environmental challenges and to seek and develop sustainable solutions that productively integrate social and economic needs with scientific and technical understanding.

Environmental Studies majors may combine coursework in sustainability, anthropology, political science, geography, history, economics, business, media arts and journalism to create an individually tailored curriculum relative to their career goals.

Impending environmental challenges include climate change, increasing drought and other extreme weather events and their impacts on infrastructure and food, energy and water supply, loss of biodiversity, increases in infectious disease, and invasive species. Environmental scientists may find themselves conducting field research to quantify such issues, while environmental studies majors may use their skills to incorporate that data into policy, advocacy and sustainable business practices.

The foundation of the music theory program is a rigorous two-year undergraduate sequence that instructs all music majors and minors in written theory and aural skills.

Students have the opportunity to explore interests in related fields such as musicology, composition and computer music and to work closely with faculty mentors on undergraduate research projects.

We also provide students with a wide variety of innovative courses in composition, conducting, education, history and performance, designed to serve the needs of our program.

By building expertise in solid mechanics, materials processes, smart materials, manufacturing automation, concurrent engineering/design, sustainable design or thermofluid/energy sciences, students stand prepared to join the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries in South Carolina and beyond.

As a mechanical engineering major, you will have the opportunity to work with a professor in research on some of today’s most notable engineering challenges. You will develop skills that will give you the ability to solve many of today’s world problems. Mechanical engineering majors will choose a concentration from design and manufacturing, engineering materials, mechanics of solids, thermal and fluid systems, and nuclear engineering.

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program at the University of South Carolina promotes an understanding of the experiences of women and other underrepresented groups through a complete program of teaching, research, and service to the University, the local community, the state, the nation and the global community. Civil engineering is everywhere: the buildings in which we live and work, the roads on which we travel, the water we drink, the bridges we cross. Civil engineering is the planning, design and construction of projects that define our civilization. Civil engineers have built landmarks that now stand as tributes to the profession's creative spirit and ingenuity.

Civil engineers analyze, plan, design, and build structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels and roads. They create infrastructure systems for personal and mass transportation. Their work contributes to the management of water resources and natural hazard protection. They provide for environmental control and remediation of both the natural and constructed environment. Civil engineers also manage urban planning and public works projects, perform air quality monitoring and plan and design waste collection and handling systems.

Our criminal justice program promotes state-of-the-art research and instruction in subject areas that are crucial to the effective and orderly working of modern society.

You will learn theories of and responses to social deviance, law and the legal system, administration theory and evaluation, law enforcement, juvenile justice systems and procedures, and crime prevention models. You will also be able to attend numerous conferences and lectures to broaden your professional perspective.

As a criminal justice major, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience that will add to your educational experience. You can gain additional experience by participating in the Campus Patrol Office program, which offers students who qualify an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an employee of the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety. With a degree in public health, you can join the effort to protect the environment, prevent the spread of disease, enhance health and well-being at home and abroad, and affect change in policy and law that ensures the rights of all citizens to a healthy world.

As a public health major, you will develop the specialized knowledge and skills needed to address current and emerging public health issues. You will learn to demonstrate proficient reasoning and critical-thinking skills, including the ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate information to make sound decisions and solve problems as they apply to public health.

As a student in the only school of public health in the state of South Carolina, you will discover quality learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. You will have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research led by well-trained, nationally known faculty and staff experts.
