Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical engineering includes the design of  shallow and deep foundations, slopes, retaining walls, levees, subsurface exploration programs, underground openings such as tunnels and mines, base/subbase/subgrade of roadways, and soil improvements under static, hydrostatic, and earthquake loadings.

Students in the mechatronics and robotics engineering program, offered through the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, create intelligent devices by combining mechanical and electrical engineering principles. These devices have mechanical and electrical components, sensors and computer software - all working together, harmoniously.

As automation and robotics increase around us, so does the need for engineers with specialized knowledge of these topics. The field of mechatronics and robotics engineering emerged out of this need to develop the best possible design while seamlessly merging mechanical and electronics knowledge. Mechatronics and robotics engineers have the interdisciplinary knowledge necessary to oversee the design and development of such intelligent devices from beginning to end, rather than completing mechanical, electrical and control designs separately.

The department and outdoor venues on our beautiful campus, situated on 2,660 acres, provide excellent opportunities for innovative biological study. The College of Arts and Sciences' outdoor classroom consists of a 75-acre lake, a 35-acre botanical garden and 380 acres of forest and restored grasslands set aside as a nature preserve. The Department of Biological Sciences is located in Science Building West, a modern, science education facility with fully equipped teaching and research labs. Transportation Engineering
Transportation engineering focuses on the design of facilities that enable the mobility of travelers. These include designing highways, traffic signals and pavements. Transportation engineers consider factors such as pedestrian and traffic safety, evacuations, pavement management and intelligent transportation systems.

The early childhood education program in the Department of Teaching and Learning leads to initial teacher licensure in Illinois to work with children birth through second grade, as well as a non-licensure option to work in infant/toddler and preschool settings that do not require teacher licensure. The program addresses national standards set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the National Association for the Education of Young Children, as well as state standards set by the Illinois State Board of Education.
