Overview

In this cross-disciplinary major, you’ll develop an advanced understanding and transnational appreciation of the evolving social, economic, political, and geographic histories of the Latin American experience in a vibrant, student-centered learning community.

After graduation, Latin studies students often pursue careers in public service, media broadcasting, community development, foreign affairs, citizenship and immigration, and international business.

The LACS undergraduate program provides a unique education that prepares you to explore the major forces that shape and transform the lives and experiences of the people and communities throughout the Americas. 

You will have the unequalled opportunity to study how events and transformations in Latin America and the Caribbean influence the formation and development of Latinx communities of the United States, in areas including: 

  • Transnationalism, migration and immigration policies
  • Social movements and collective political action
  • Diaspora communities 
  • Culture, power and knowledge
  • The formation of identities 

In this interdisciplinary major, you will take classes in different academic fields, such as anthropology, sociology, women's studies, economics, political science, and geography and regional planning. This will uniquely prepare you to study what is interest to you from multiple perspectives. 

In addition, you will have opportunities for community-oriented research, community service and internships. You can also choose to study abroad in a number of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.
