As you move through the 49-credit MPA curriculum and complete your professional internship, you learn how to successfully oversee projects, support and motivate teams, improve organizational performance, and monitor policy impact to help solve complex socioeconomic problems.

Public Policy
If you're interested in public policy we have two main concentrations and a set of substantive concentrations in specific policy areas (e.g., health policy; education policy; criminal justice policy; women and public policy, global affairs, etc) that you might choose to design with the assistance of your advisor.

If you're interested in more applied quantitative or qualitative skills in conducting policy analysis, we recommend the Policy Analytic Methods concentration.

If you have an interest in the policy process and politics (i.e., drafting legislation, political advocacy/strategy, lobbying, etc), we recommend the Policy Process, Politics and Institutions concentration.

Learn how to analyze and report on policy issues, and how to manage information resources in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

To develop specialized skills, you can earn sub-concentrations by taking multiple courses in one or two sub-fields:
Policy Analysis
Work at a research institute or a government agency to evaluate how well policies and public programs work. Work as a legislative analyst to identify the best policy to implement. Policy Process, Politics and Institutions
Understand the role of public institutions in policies development and the administration of political systems of the United States and other countries.

Gain an advanced understanding of the criminal justice system and criminology. Whether you want to further your role in law enforcement or become active in public policy, you will acquire the knowledge for a successful career in areas like policing, law, crime analysis, and research with a master's degree in criminal justice from the University at Albany.

Build connections and put your knowledge to practice through internships at national, state, and local agencies. Tailor your studies to match your career goals through a general track or select a concentration.

Through diverse course offerings you will learn about the structure of criminal justice systems, theories of crime, and evaluation of effective policy and practice using enhanced research and statistical skills.

Justice Systems
The study of how societies respond to crime through policy and practice, and the value systems that underlie those responses (examples include courses on behavior of police, courts, and corrections agencies; law and social control; juvenile justice; international responses to crime).

In an era characterized by the proliferation of information, the role of the school librarian is more important than ever. School librarians teach students, teachers and community members how to find and use reliable information, how to be responsible and responsive digital citizens, and how to be both consumers and producers of information.

ISSL’s curriculum combines various disciplines to prepare 21st-century school librarians including: library and information science, education, cognitive science, instructional technology and design, psychology and sociology. The program is aligned to the National School Library Standards and is one of the first school library graduate programs to offer a makerspace course.

Our fully online program is purposefully designed to prepare candidates to be information professionals and leaders as teacher/librarians in New York State and across the nation. We integrate learning experiences throughout the program that enable students to document evidence of their practice on student learning. Thus, in addition to mastering information literacy and technology competencies, our graduates are assessment literate.

Launch your career as an information technology security analyst, cyber defense manager, or forensic examiner in the private or public sector. 

UAlbany’s master’s in digital forensics and cybersecurity will teach you how to rapidly detect and deter malicious network intruders and use special forensics tools to gather and analyze digital evidence.

The BA in Anthropology program features four subfields covering archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics. The electives that are offered will help you to focus your passions within a subfield in areas like ancient languages, symbology, physiology, religion, and native cultures. A faculty advisor will guide you to tailor your curriculum to your career goals.

A minimum of 36 credits in anthropology are required, including:

• Of the 21 additional credits in anthropology, no more than 6 may be at the 100 level and at least 12 must be at the 300 level or above.

Become proficient in the methodologies and technologies involved in remote sensing, spatial analysis, and geographic data mapping in the master’s in geographic information science program at the University at Albany.

This two-year graduate program prepares you for a variety of careers that use sophisticated photographic and non-photographic data collection, digital imaging, and advanced geolocation systems to investigate relationships between human culture and changes in the environment.

Coursework includes topics in image processing, automated mapping, augmented reality, spatial statistical analysis, and global navigation satellite systems.

Explore topics in arts, humanities and the social sciences in the master’s in liberal studies program at UAlbany. Design your own MA track with help from the program director and active faculty. You will first complete requirements from humanities and social sciences survey courses, each of which offers a broad overview of its field.

Your elective selections will span at least two university departments and may examine diverse topics such as literary and cultural theory, gender, race and ethnicity, postcolonial studies, human rights, politics and law.

Complete your MA with a master’s thesis. This scholarly research project will build upon what you have studied in your coursework, affording you the opportunity to delve into an area of personal and professional interest.

In your first year, you learn fundamental concepts in finance, accounting, marketing, operations, human resource management, organizational behavior, and information technology. You will also travel abroad and participate in an international consulting project.

During your second year, you work closely with research faculty and regional business leaders as you develop leading edge knowledge and practical skills in your concentration area through hands-on experiences in real business settings.

Concentration options include cybersecurity, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource information systems, information systems and business analysis, and marketing.

Finance
Learn how to apply financial concepts to manage investment portfolios and analyze and assess the value of alternative investments in commodities, hedge funds, private equity, real assets, and structured products.

With a concentration in finance, you have the option to complete a resume-building internship along with the required finance research thesis.

Dive into the Spanish language. Language skills, historical reference points and topical awareness must be a priority as you become involved in cultural issues involving Spanish-speaking populations around the world.
