Sociology explores how our lives, behaviors, and identities are shaped by our ties to others, from intimate spheres to global ones. Completing the Sociology major gives you the tools to understand the complex structures of the social world and how they interact. Sociology courses at Brockport include topics as diverse as sport, health, race and ethnicity, food, gender, education, and human rights.

At the core of sociology is what C. Wright Mills calls "The Sociological Imagination," the awareness that "neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both." Rigorous research and creative concepts enable sociologists to, in Pierre Bourdieu's words, "think in a completely astonished and disconcerted way about things you thought you had always understood."

Both scientific and humanistic, sociology is a classic, liberal-arts discipline. Sociology students learn to examine both cultures and social structures, gaining significant insights into society, social change, and their own social identities. Research and analytical skills, combined with an emphases on effective communication and critical thinking, prepare sociology students for success in graduate school or careers in the social service, nonprofit, public-sector, and business fields.

This dual certification major is designed to prepare students for initial certification to teach both Chemistry and Student with Disabilities (SWD) as a Generalist in grades 7 to 12, with an extension to teach Chemistry in grades 5 and 6. In addition, this major prepares students for the Content Specialty Tests (CSTs) required for the dual certification.

This major includes 55 credits in the Chemistry Content Core and 43 credits of Pedagogy Content offered by the Department of Education and Human Development (EHD).  It also includes a series of specific General Education courses to prepare for the multi-subject CST that is required to certify as a SWD Generalist. Because of the large number of required credits in this major, students must plan their time at Brockport carefully and consult with advisors in both Chemistry and EHD.

The Chemistry Adolescence Inclusive Education major leads to the following initial certifications (see 'Certification' below for all requirements) as outlined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED):

Students will be able to demonstrate understanding and apply the principles of:

• Chemical nomenclature.
• Atomic structure and quantum theory.
• Molecular structure and reactivity.
• Stoichiometric calculations based upon chemical formulae and balanced chemical equations including oxidation-reduction reactions.
• Chemical energetics and thermodynamics including chemical equilibrium.
• Reaction dynamics (kinetics and mechanisms).
• Descriptive chemistry of the elements, compounds, and trends in the periodic table.

The studio art major is designed to provide a well-rounded, multi-disciplinary education in the appreciation and creation of visual art and design, encompassing two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, art and design history and criticism, and a four-course disciplinary concentration in one area such as Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Meteorology majors must earn a minimum of 43 credits in required core courses, and complete three semesters of calculus and differential equations, two semesters of calculus-based physics, and one semester each of chemistry and computer programming.The major in Meteorology prepares students for careers in weather forecasting, atmospheric research, environmental consulting and air quality management. The strong physical science orientation of the program allows students to compete in related fields, such as environmental and computer science, hydrology, and alternative energy utilization. The major meets the federal guidelines for meteorologists, enabling graduates to begin careers in federal, state and private employment.

International Studies (INS) is a major that helps students understand competition, conflict, and cooperation around the world today. INS majors study the politics, history, economics, languages, and cultures of countries and communities around the globe. They graduate having developed a thorough familiarity with the dominant trends and dynamics shaping the world – something that many employers prize in today's globalized and interdependent economy.
Brockport's INS major provides excellent preparation for a range of careers. In the public sector, INS majors' knowledge of the world makes them competitive for positions in military service, diplomacy, intelligence, economic development, or law enforcement. In the private sector, majors are strong candidates for positions in international business, lobbying, health, journalism, and education. In the non-profit sector, INS majors can find work in global development, humanitarian assistance, human rights, and environmental conservation. Finally, the INS major helps prepare students for graduate programs in law, business, foreign affairs, and public administration.

Physics pursues answers to how the Universe works on scales both large and small. High school teachers get to share these answers with their students and spark their curiosity about the natural world.

Your Physics Teacher Education degree will provide you with the content and skills necessary to become an outstanding educator in Physics and prepare you to teach in today's diverse classrooms. You will leave with an initial single certification in teaching Physics.

Our accounting professions seminar prepares you for the extensive recruiting activities that annually occur on campus.

Qualified undergraduates can also take advantage of our one-year MS in Accounting program, granting them the necessary 150 credit hours to become eligible for the CPA license.

Our accounting program is accredited and registered with the New York State Board of Education.

What You’ll Learn

You will gain a strong foundation in accurately reporting financial data and utilizing this information to evaluate and make strategic business decisions. Our students complete specialized coursework in accounting software and learn about the current regulatory environment. 

The Communication Studies major explores human communication in a variety of contexts, including interpersonal, professional, public, mediated, and cross-cultural settings, and examines the social influence of language and media. Students investigate a variety of communication practices with learning experiences in theory, history, criticism, application, and performance.

Geology majors must earn a minimum of 42 credits in required core courses and complete two semesters each of physics, calculus and chemistry. This major offers sound training in the study of the earth and its resources, and equips the student for pursuit of careers in geology leading to professional licensure, and for graduate studies in geochemistry, petroleum exploration, paleontology, hydrogeology, ground water, environmental geology, or sedimentology/stratigraphy.

This major is designed to prepare students for initial certification (single certification) as a Spanish teacher for grades 7-12 with extension to teach in grades 5 and 6. As with all other undergraduate degrees, students in this major must also complete the General Education program requirements. Students who plan their schedules carefully and take courses that count for general education as well as the major or teacher certification requirements may be able to also pursue a minor or participate in a study abroad program in a Spanish-speaking country. Students may have the opportunity to student teach in Alaska or abroad.

Administered by the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations, the major in Journalism and Broadcasting (JRB) prepares students for careers in online, TV, radio, newspaper and magazine journalism; public and community relations; public information; advertising; corporate communications; television and radio station sales, promotions and management, independent and corporate production studios, corporate media centers and government service.
