Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The Secondary Education program prepares you to teach 9th through 12th grade in a variety of urban and suburban education settings, including public and private high schools. You can graduate with a State of Illinois license to teach designated subject-area content (listed below). The program also provides you an opportunity to receive a Diploma Year Program Award (IB certification) to teach in International Baccalaureate schools world-wide.

As part of the secondary education major, you’ll learn educational theories and effective teaching practices, including how to design and implement curriculum; participate in extensive field experiences at multiple schools, and student-teach for 10 weeks.

In the public policy program you’ll learn the foundations of basic policy theory and research methods. As a public policy major, you’ll also examine how public policy is formulated, implemented, and evaluated over time, while you explore notions of agenda-setting and framing of issues that lead to a problem gaining the attention of the government.

Public Policy majors take courses dealing with public policy theories, processes, methods of public policy analysis, and important environmental and urban policy issues. Under the guidance of a public policy professor, you’ll choose a public policy problem to analyze in-depth for your capstone course.

Master of Science in Mathematics for Teaching

Prepare to share your skills and knowledge as a classroom instructor of math. DePaul’s MS in Mathematics for Teaching is the only graduate program in the area for career-changers planning to teach math at the community college level. Intensive weekend and evening sessions focus on

  • Differential and integral calculus, numerical algorithms related to calculus and implementation of these algorithms using graphing calculators and web-based software;
  • Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry using software packages that emphasize content connected to the high school curriculum;
  • Discrete mathematical structures with an emphasis on logic, proof and mathematical reasoning;
  • Probability and statistics with an introduction to combinatorics;
  • History of elementary number theory, algebra and geometry;
  • Topics in abstract algebra that relate to high school courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry;
  • Differential equations and advanced linear algebra; and
  • Topics in real analysis with an emphasis on improving calculus instruction.

American Studies majors will examine the breadth and diversity of the American experience. American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that integrates the study of literature, history, geography, media, politics, popular culture, art and religion in order to critically analyze American society, culture, institutions and intellectual traditions.

As an American Studies major, you’ll be encouraged to question what constitutes American culture, and how cultural expressions reflect and reveal American values, beliefs, prejudices, pleasures and perceptions.

American Studies majors will gain competency in American cultural studies by mastering the theoretical and intellectual frameworks of their concentrations and by learning to interpret and analyze primary documents. Students in other interdisciplinary programs find American Studies a common double major or minor when combined with majors such as history, communication, anthropology, English, political science or sociology.

The graduate jazz studies program provides students a comprehensive education in jazz, allowing students to specialize in either performance or composition. Drawing upon the resources of the Chicago jazz scene, faculty members are highly celebrated performers, teachers, composers, and arrangers. In addition to applied jazz lessons, jazz ensembles, and jazz combos, Master of Music students enroll in courses such as jazz theory, history, pedagogy, improvisation, composing, and/or arranging. Throughout the program, jazz students have multiple opportunities to record performances and compositions in professional recording studios.

Learn the history of and experience the creative possibilities of visual culture through a project-based curriculum in art-making. The programs emphasize fundamental artistic concepts through problem solving and experimentation in studio courses.

You’ll work closely with faculty who are practicing artists in dedicated art studios on campus.
