The Japanese Studies program focuses on Japanese language, literature and culture. More than 130 million people speak Japanese across the world. You will explore Japanese culture and society through an interdisciplinary approach.

Fluency in Japanese and an understanding of Japanese culture will prepare you for professional success in for a variety of careers, such as business, arts, diplomacy, media and education.

As a Japanese major, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in DePaul’s Study Abroad programs in programs in Kyoto, Nagoya or Osaka, where you’ll strengthen your linguistic skills and become immersed in Japanese culture.

As a German major, you’ll study German and Austrian cultures (authors, musicians, literature), language and notions of German history. German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union, and German-speaking countries are among the most influential engines driving culture, business and politics today.

Through your studies, you will learn that the German-speaking world is rich and multifaceted, including the works of Mozart, Goethe, Freud, Kafka and Marx. As a German major, you’ll explore the crucial questions of memory and history particular to the German past. The Secondary Education program prepares you to teach 9th through 12th grade in a variety of urban and suburban education settings, including public and private high schools. You can graduate with a State of Illinois license to teach designated subject-area content (listed below). The program also provides you an opportunity to receive a Diploma Year Program Award (IB certification) to teach in International Baccalaureate schools world-wide.

As part of the secondary education major, you’ll learn educational theories and effective teaching practices, including how to design and implement curriculum; participate in extensive field experiences at multiple schools, and student-teach for 10 weeks.

Anthropology is the comparative study of humanity that focuses on people in all places throughout history. Study beliefs, values and practices of various cultures and compare similarities and differences among diverse groups. By analyzing other cultures, you will learn more about your own.

Research plays an important role in the study of anthropology and will take place both in and outside of the classroom. Gain hands-on research experience in our archeological field school and projects throughout the city of Chicago. The Bachelor of Arts in anthropology prepares you with extensive knowledge of this field, qualifying you to work in nonprofit and for-profit research settings as well as academic careers.
