Overview

The Department of Psychology is represented by faculty at three FAU campuses (Boca Raton, Davie and Jupiter). The Department of Psychology maintains a research-intensive graduate program, offering the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Experimental Psychology and Master of Arts degree in Psychology. We service over 2100 undergraduate majors as well. Our award-winning and internationally renowned faculty conduct research in four core areas of Psychology: Cognitive & Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental, Neuroscience, and Social/Personality Psychology. Students in our program undergo rigorous academic and research training and have gone on to successful careers in both academia and industry.

Part of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, the department maintains close links with the Center for Complex Systems, with many faculty maintaining dual appointments. The department is among the most successful in the college in obtaining external funding and enjoys a strong national and international profile.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering offers a program of study leading to the degree of Master of Science with Major in Civil Engineering (MSCV). The mission of the program is to meet the advanced civil engineering educational needs of recent graduates of undergraduate engineering degree programs, practicing engineers and those non-engineering professionals wishing to redirect their career paths. Graduates of the program possess the following attributes or educational outcomes:

  • Knowledge in civil engineering and related subjects significantly beyond the baccalaureate level.
  • Ability to independently conduct research or a significant practice-oriented project in civil engineering.
  • Ability to communicate their ideas and results in written, oral, and graphical forms.

These educational outcomes result from successful completion of a well-planned, rigorous set of courses and a major capstone experience (either a thesis or practice-oriented project). In the liberal arts tradition, the FAU Bachelor of Arts in Theatre curriculum is intended for students seeking a broad exposure to the study of theatre and drama. It provides students with a broad range of valuable skills.

Through voice, movement and dance classes, students learn to control their voice’s pitch, projection, breathing, and articulation. Their dance and movement classes teach them to become poised, self-assured, natural, and expressive onstage.

Classes such as Dramatic Theory & Genre and Script Analysis encourage students to listen and learn, observe and concentrate with a heightened sense of awareness. The theatre environment can be quite competitive and they’ll learn to solve problems using critical thought processes in creative ways. The B.A. in Theatre is a program well-suited for those who may eventually want to pursue graduate studies in Theatre.

The Anthropology Department offers an undergraduate program that provides a framework for understanding human cultures and societies through culture, archaeology, adaptation and evolution. The Department prepares students for understanding the past and the present of a rapidly globalizing world by developing knowledge of the national, ethnic and cultural complexities that operate within the contemporary world. Graduates with a major in Anthropology have a knowledge and understanding of the cultures of Western and non-Western peoples, and are qualified to work in local, national, and international agencies, and the corporate world. An undergraduate degree in Anthropology provides the basis for a graduate degree in Anthropology and any of the other social sciences.
