Economics has become an integral part of our modern society. An understanding of economics is indispensable when it comes to running a successful business, making sense of international events and analyzing government policy. Graduates with a background in economics enjoy a unique advantage in that economics offers a specialized and powerful framework for tackling today’s problems in the increasingly competitive and global economy.

Economics with a Business Economics concentration (ECON-EBUS): This program has the same diverse foundation in core business principles as other majors in the College, but also integrates economics courses in such a way that the student can analyze business problems with the insight that the economics discipline offers.

The Department of Political Science offers undergraduate and graduate courses that contribute to the understanding of American politics, comparative politics, and international relations. The Department embraces the epistemology of social science research and helps students develop skills important to this field, and many others, including written and oral communication and critical thinking.

The Department offers a B.A. in political science which provides a flexible curriculum that allows students to design a program of study tailored to their academic, professional and personal interests.

Secondary Teacher Education degree programs are offered in partnership with the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. These programs are Florida Department of Education (DOE) and Council for Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) approved. This state and CAEP approval represents the transferability of teaching credentials from state-to-state. Secondary programs currently approved include the following subject area and grade levels:

Accounting is renowned as the language and basic tool of business. Every type of business, from private industry, to local, state, and federal public careers, to government, and even academia require accountants. Accountant skills are in demand and they always will be; the job opportunities that exist today are better than ever.

The School of Accounting is selective. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Students who have a high-standing in pre-business courses and/or relevant business experience are preferable to those who do not have such qualifications. Students who have been dismissed from any traditional Accounting program are not eligible for re-admission.

The Art History Program requires courses in art appreciation, foundations drawing and design, an upper division studio art course, a course in aesthetics and art theory, a minimum of 28 credits in upper level art history, and a senior seminar in art history. Graduates in Art History have gone on from FAU to jobs at museums and galleries, and many have continued on to pursue graduate degrees. It is the belief of the faculty that a well-rounded preparation in Art History is also important to success in every branch of the visual arts, and to this end foreign study programs are offered in France, Italy, and Spain and departmental awards are available both to concentrators in the studio areas and to those in Art History.

Our programs provide the flexibility you need, allowing students to pick and choose between traditional and fully online classes, with opportunities to engage in a wide variety of research, both taking place in key areas in South Florida and across the world.

The Graphic Design Program provides students with the skills to pursue career opportunities in graphic design and visual communication. The overall goal of the program is to sharpen students’ abilities in visual problem solving and translating verbal concepts into visual images, image-making techniques, and graphic techniques that communicate intended messages, moods, and concepts. Graphic design projects include posters, brochures, corporate identity systems, trademarks, books, magazines, and advertisements of all kinds. Courses cover all facets of the visual communication process, from thumbnail sketches to printed pieces. Students are given assignments much like those they would encounter in professional settings. The program is planned to help students balance studies in art history and studio art with studies in graphic design and computer graphics. Through each course in the program, students are encouraged to develop an appreciation of the various philosophical and ideological positions that could affect their design perspectives.

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Biology is a rigorous, streamlined, pre-professional program unique in Southeast Florida that will enable students to pursue competitive professional training programs in the health sciences. This program is tailored for students who seek entrance into top-tier schools in the fields of medicine, veterinary science, pharmacology, and more.  

Students pursuing a master’s or a doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, or Psychology, including those at FAU, will also find the B.S. in Medical Biology an attractive path.

Students majoring in Medical Biology will benefit from a challenging, highly-structured course plan designed to fulfill the prerequisites of medically-focused programs through pre-selected core and elective courses that will prepare students for professional entrance exams, moving students one step closer to their academic and professional goals. This structured flight plan offers students a streamlined path to completing the degree.

In addition to the robust coursework, students will have the opportunity to actively participate in all phases of research alongside world-class researchers – from the planning and execution of an experiment to the analysis and dissemination of the results, in the areas of biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and biomedical science

The Biochemistry B.S. Program is designed for students pursuing careers in biochemistry and related disciplines, such as molecular biology, biophysics, and pharmacology. Additionally, premedical students who wish to pursue a research-oriented curriculum might be interested in this program.

As Coordinator for the BSW Program, I am pleased to welcome our incoming students, as well as invite prospective students to apply for a position in our highly regarded BSW program. As ongoing students can tell you, our faculty members are bright, energetic, and well connected to the social work communities in south Florida. Our students are offered a solid program of academic courses and hands-on training and experience in our field practicum program. Our graduates are prepared for entry-level social work positions in a broad range of settings (e.g., child welfare, criminal justice, schools, gerontology), as well as for entry into an MSW program. Some of our graduates also move onto other fields of professional graduate education such as law, political science, and administration. Our program (accredited by the Council on Social Work Education) is based upon the Generalist Intervention Model, which uses a strength-based approach to working with individuals, families, groups, and communities.

The goals of the FAU School of Social Work are to provide students with a curriculum that will adequately prepare them for beginning generalist social work practice, graduate study in social work, and effective participation in community processes. The content of the social work practice curriculum relates to:

• Client systems of various sizes and types;
• The diverse populations of southeast Florida;
• Societal, community, and agency contexts, and their changing natures, the behavior of organizations, and the dynamics of change;
• Values and ethics of the social work profession, and;
• Emphasizing awareness of the responsibility to continue professional growth and development.
