Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

The Bachelor of Science with Major in Data Science and Analytics (BSDSA) is a multi-college, interdisciplinary program jointly administered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Department of Information Technology and Operations Management {ITOM) in the College of Business, the Department of Political Science in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice.

Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies - Multimedia Journalism
The Multimedia Journalism Sequence prepares students to work in the new media convergence environment — where competition, deregulation, and digital technology break down the barriers among print, radio, television, and the Internet.
Students are expected to develop strong basic writing and analytical skills and then to become adept at writing and producing for multiple media platforms simultaneously, exhibiting the versatility necessary to succeed in a quickly evolving and growing media market.
The goals of the Multimedia Journalism Sequence are to provide a broad liberal arts education as well as develop professional skills so that graduates are able to fully exercise the civic responsibilities of journalists for the lively functioning of democratic institutions. In addition, students will choose an emphasis in another discipline that will help them fulfill the important role of information provider in today's global, technological, and information-based society.

The Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice provides students with knowledge about the nature and causes of crime and delinquency, law and the legal system for juveniles and adults in American society, and the decision processes of criminal justice agencies. A Criminal Justice major is broadly educated within a general education framework in the liberal arts and also provided with courses that directly apply to careers within the criminal and juvenile justice systems and the study of law. FAU's Sociology major is distinctive as a flexible skills based major. The major lets students choose a plan of study that suits their career interests, focuses on topics that intrigue and challenge them, and helps them to build their own "sociological tool kit" for addressing personal and social problems. Every course includes coverage of core skills and basic knowledge of the discipline in addition to material that is distinctive to the topics. The Department of Psychology is represented by faculty at three FAU campuses (Boca Raton, Davie and Jupiter). The Department of Psychology maintains a research-intensive graduate program, offering the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Experimental Psychology and Master of Arts degree in Psychology. We service over 2100 undergraduate majors as well. Our award-winning and internationally renowned faculty conduct research in four core areas of Psychology: Cognitive & Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental, Neuroscience, and Social/Personality Psychology. Students in our program undergo rigorous academic and research training and have gone on to successful careers in both academia and industry.
Part of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, the department maintains close links with the Center for Complex Systems, with many faculty maintaining dual appointments. Bachelor of Business Administration in Management with Concentration in Entrepreneurship
Designed to develop and prepare the business leaders of tomorrow to tackle the challenges of the global business environment, the major in Management has two tracks: Leadership and Applied Management, and Entrepreneurship.
Students in the Leadership track have opportunities to advance in human resources and management with various levels of responsibility building successful teams while managing an increasingly complex business environment. Successful leaders develop the strategies, plans, procedures, and policies that guide a business team in the short and long term. Successful leaders do so by coordinating human, financial, and material assets to achieve organizational objectives.
Students in the Entrepreneurship track receive mentoring and develop the skills they need to start their own business or work in a business startup. Entrepreneurs are at the heart of job growth. Students with the intentions of one day leading their own business will benefit from this quality program. In addition, students have numerous resources available on campus such as the Adams Center For Entrepreneurship and the Research Park at FAU to assist them with a start-up. Both tracks are designed to permit a dual major or minor in a targeted area of interest.
