Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Progress in the field is based upon completion of examinations given by the Society of Actuaries (SOA). The LIU Post major is designed to prepare students to pass the first three SOA examinations as well as complete the three required Validated by Educational Experience (VEE) courses. Students interested in this highly structured program are urged to contact the Department of Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics as early as possible to aid in formulating an appropriate course of study.

With the specialized, advanced training provided by the 58-credit Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology you will be equipped for a career diagnosing and treating a wide range of speech, language, swallowing and hearing disorders. 

The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in speech-language pathology at LIU Post is designed to mentor and educate students to become competent, caring, qualified and accountable speech-language pathologists who in turn will be well equipped to serve clients in a culturally and linguistically diverse society. Our goal is to provide students with a comprehensive program, built upon a sound theoretical foundation in speech, language and hearing sciences, in which clinical skill development is integrated. Educational and clinical experiences will be guided by a strong adherence to evidence based practice.  Strong clinical reasoning, decision making, and communication skills will be developed through training and supervised practice.  Students will be required to demonstrate high standards of competency and ethical conduct within the scope of professional practice. An important element in our training of MA candidates includes inter-professional educational opportunities where students can learn from and work closely with other disciplines. Simulated experiences at our state of the art Simlab and with computerized simulators assists students to be prepared for clinical interaction and to practice their skills. We seek to guide our students through the program by providing advisement, instruction, as well as clinical and intellectual challenges. Our program goals are both formative and summative in accordance with standards of our professional accrediting organization, the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. They are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, and grief. They also help with job and career concerns, educational decisions, mental and emotional health issues, and relationship problems. In addition, they may be involved in community outreach, advocacy, and mediation activities. Some specialize in delivering mental health services for the elderly. Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors. Mental health counselors work in community health and social service organizations, day treatment programs, outpatient mental health clinics, hospitals, or private practice.

The 60-credit M.S. in Mental Health Counseling provides students with core knowledge to be effective helpers in a variety of clinical settings. The program covers professional issues and ethics, counseling theories, human development, counseling skills, group work, assessment and career development. Building upon these core content areas, the mental health counseling program focuses specifically on the development of knowledge and skills necessary to work in a variety of clinical settings, such as: foundations of mental health counseling; research; evidence-based practice; program evaluation; psychopathology and psychopharmacology.

Forensic science is the exciting field where science and technology meet the law. As a forensic scientist you will bring the most advanced scientific tools to bear on the most pressing problems, including solving crimes and saving lives. The challenge of forensic science is to look back in time to determine the who, what, when, where and why of disputed events. In your search for clues that dispel mysteries and serve justice, you will investigate everything from DNA, blood and other body fluids to textiles, footwear, footprints, tire tracks, documents and signatures, flammables, pollutants and much more.

LIU Post’s 120-credit Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree will prepare you for a rewarding career in the laboratory departments of police departments, medical examiners’ offices, toxicology and pathology. The program integrates lecture courses with laboratory work and hands-on field experiences. Students study a broad range of forensic applications such as molecular pathology, criminalistics, human genetics and forensic anthropology. Classes are taught by practicing forensic scientists, medical professionals and LIU Post professors of biomedical sciences, chemistry, criminal justice and forensic science. In addition, students serve as interns at highly-productive Long Island and Manhattan crime laboratories, health departments and medical examiners’ offices.

The B.S. in Forensic Science degree is offered jointly through the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Health Professions and Nursing and the Department of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences

The M.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science program is a 52- credit program requiring a 6-month full-time clinical placement. Students may begin as part-time but will require a full-time commitment in order to complete this graduate degree program.

Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) are highly skilled laboratory professionals who are qualified by national certification and NYS licensure to work in several areas of a clinical laboratory, including hematology, microbiology, immunohematology, chemistry, immunology and molecular diagnostics (CLS generalist). They play a key role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and illnesses. Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, CLS generalists perform tests and analyze cells, blood and other body fluids to detect abnormalities.
