Chemistry

UHart’s Chemistry Department offers major programs designed to give you a thorough foundation in all areas of chemistry, and is a great place to study if you are planning for a career in chemistry, biochemistry, the medical profession, environmental law, forensics, food science, chemical physics, or any other related discipline.

With its heavy concentration in science and mathematics, our Bachelor of Science in Chemistry prepares you for positions in the chemical industry or for graduate study in specialized areas of chemistry.

Criminal Justice
Criminal justice courses are taught by faculty who have in-depth experience as criminal justice attorneys, gang unit and state police officers, medical examiners, and probation administrators. The program offers you opportunities to study within agencies dealing with crime and justice and take courses that study the full range of issues related to the social nature of crime, criminal law, and social control.

Mechanical Engineering
The Master of Science (MS) in mechanical engineering program is a research-oriented program that focuses on the advancement of the fundamental body of knowledge in mechanical engineering while also fostering the development of skills in design and analysis. This program lets you study an area of interest as part of a graduate thesis. Work towards solving a contemporary problem and become a technical expert. This program is also ideal for those who endeavor to eventually pursue their doctoral degree in an area within engineering.

The pre-professional track of the health sciences program prepares you for professional graduate study in fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, physician assistant, or pharmacy. You can pursue the degree on a full- or part-time basis, and you can enter the program as a freshman or a transfer student.The pre-professional track of the health sciences program prepares you for professional graduate study in fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, physician assistant, or pharmacy. Our health sciences program grounds you in the liberal arts with a firm foundation in the sciences, while providing a broad overview of the health care system. By majoring in health sciences, you can prepare for future study in a wide range of health care careers.

Flute
To enrich pedagogy skills, the Hartt flute studio uses a mentoring system that pairs an undergraduate student with a graduate flutist.  They meet together for a minimum of two hours a week to work in duets, resolve any problems revealed in Techniques Class, and for the chance to do research and get feedback from a partner. This gives the graduate students a chance to develop and refine their teaching techniques before leaving school, while the undergraduates benefit from the additional “one-on-one” help in between lessons and get to know fellow flute students more quickly.

Pairs rotate every 4 weeks so everyone has the opportunity to meet and work together, creating a true collaborative atmosphere in the flute studio. The students are collegial and supportive, each gaining more from these additional opportunities to participate with their peers than they would on their own.

The Master of Engineering (MEng) in mechanical engineering program emphasizes applied design and stresses the development of oral, visual, and written communication skills in mechanical engineering to enable individuals to advance in their careers. The program offers fundamental as well as design-oriented specialty coursework, applied mathematics, and engineering management. You may concentrate your studies in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or turbomachinery engineering for the MEng degree by selecting appropriate courses available.

The Music Theory program at The Hartt School is designed to prepare you for graduate studies, teaching, or a research career. Our students study tonal harmony, tonal analysis, modern techniques, tonal counterpoint, modal counterpoint, keyboard harmony, score reading, orchestration, and music theory pedagogy.

The diverse backgrounds of Hartt’s Music Theory faculty allow theory majors to approach music from multiple angles, gain appreciation and respect for varied perspectives, and ultimately shape an intellectual approach to music theory that best suits them.

The Master of Music (MM) degree in music theory is designed to prepare students for a teaching or research career in music theory. Applicants to the program usually have an undergraduate degree in music theory or its equivalent. Graduate music theory majors follow a four-semester curriculum of 36 credits. It includes instruction in modern analysis, Schenkerian analysis, history of music theory, and seminars in music theory and music history. An important feature of the curriculum is the flexibility in elective course work appropriate to the interests and needs of the student. A Master’s thesis serves as the capstone.

Health Sciences - Pre-Optometry

The BS/OD program is for the academically outstanding student with strong, realistic motivation toward the optometric profession. Initial study at the University of Hartford allows you to complete the general education and basic science requirements for the BS in health science degree and the prerequisites necessary for professional study.

The BS degree is awarded by the University of Hartford following the successful completion of the first year of graduate study. Students who are not in the accelerated program typically complete the BS degree in four years at the University of Hartford.

The optometry program requires four years of combined academic and clinical training leading to the OD degree, which is a prerequisite for licensure eligibility in the United States. The New England College of Optometry provides students with an accredited four-year professional optometry curriculum.

Music Theatre
Hartt’s music theatre major integrates comprehensive actor training with rigorous instruction in singing and dance. Weekly individual voice lessons, along with classes in ear training and music theory, provide you with a strong musical foundation. Multiple levels of ballet, jazz, and tap help you develop the dance skills required for professional success.
