The International Pathway Program (IPP) is designed especially for international students who have proven their academic ability but need to strengthen their English skills to achieve positive results in the collegiate environment. Students study a combination of English Language courses and credit-bearing academic courses. So they can earn credits towards their degree from the beginning.

Guitar
In 1968, Hartt graduated its first guitar major and over the years the program has expanded to offer a Master of Music, Graduate Professional Diploma, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Artist Diploma.

At Hartt, you will participate in masterclasses given by world renowned performers. Past guest artists include Oscar Ghiglia, Antigoni Goni, and Andrew York.

Our graduates presently hold or have held guitar positions at various prestigious institutions, including New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, The Longy School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory.

Our alumni and present students have won or been finalists in the Alirio Diaz International Guitar Competition in Venezuela, Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition, American String Teachers Competition, MTNA competition, and Appalachian State Guitar Competition.

In addition to classical guitar training, you will also experience chamber music, guitar pedagogy, guitar literature, lute and baroque guitar tablature, and electric guitar styles. Our goal is to graduate students who are well-prepared to enter the fields of concert performance and college teaching. Towards that end we hold weekly performance classes that are required of all performance majors. In addition, every year, we sponsor six to eight public performances as part of our Evening with Guitar concert series.  This provides our students the opportunity to develop and refine their performance skills in a professional setting.

Composition
Diverse areas of expertise and interests represented among the faculty allow students to find the guidance they need to express their individuality through their music. Through studies in traditional concert music, film music, music for the theatre, improvisation, and advanced modern compositional techniques, students are exposed to an ever-changing array of music.
The composition department is a community that fosters cooperation between its students and faculty. Through once-a-week composition seminars, students and faculty members have the opportunity to discuss each other's music and to hear music by visiting composers. Students take an introductory composition course during their first two semesters and then have three years of individual lessons with faculty composers. This assures a regular, disciplined course of study.

Percussion

Our philosophy regarding percussion education is to be as all-inclusive as possible. As a Hartt student, you will typically study solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire, as well as improvisation, drum-set, and percussion instruments from other cultures (particularly from Africa, the Middle East, Cuba, Brazil, and Trinidad). We routinely hire guest teachers with focused areas of expertise in order to compliment our more traditional offerings. As a result, Hartt percussion alumni have been very successful in finding a variety of jobs throughout the country.

Viola

You will join a tight-knit community of artists who are perfecting their craft. Through personal attention and mentorship from Hartt’s accomplished faculty members, you will develop innovative ideas and career ready skills.

Sociology

Our sociology program is designed to increase your understanding of factors that determine social relationships and social organization. You take courses that cover current social issues like race relations, inequality, health care, gender, and modern family life. We encourage you to participate in an individually designed internships so you can combine your academics with your future career interests.

Music
A diverse range of courses in the humanities and sciences are geared toward developing the student's intellectual skills by emphasizing written communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and the importance of being an informed, socially responsible citizen of the world.

Entrepreneurial Studies
This interdisciplinary major gives you a background in many disciplines, including marketing, finance, accounting, and law. You will graduate with understanding of all aspects of business.

Gain hands-on experience by providing resources, training, and support to a local micro-business. You will complete a professional business plan to use to start your own venture. You may also choose to enter our annual Business Plan Competition. Our faculty advisors will help you every step of the way.

Visual Communication Design
The visual communication design (VCD) program encompasses all visual languages used to communicate, therefore your coursework aims strengthen your skills as a designer. Classes on design theory, methods, and history align with practical work with real clients by the time you reach your senior year.

Designers in this program are able to think critically about how to tell a story using design elements rather than words. You must be able to think not only about how your work looks, but also about how other people will interact with it.

Actor Training
The actor training major challenges you to expand both your craft and your creative imagination so that you can be successful in a broad range of theatrical styles from the contemporary to the classical. A carefully planned progression of acting, voice and speech, and movement classes stimulates your talent and builds the capacity to be bold and innovative. Fourth-year actor training students audition for roles in the Hartford Stage Company’s season, including its annual production of A Christmas Carol.

Ballet Pedagogy
The ballet pedagogy emphasis is designed to prepare students for a career in dance education at the highest level. Students are trained to teach ballet to all ages in professional school and university dance programs. This major strongly emphasizes pedagogical structure and theory, covering different styles and schools of ballet and modern dance, from the earliest pre-ballet to coaching the advanced dancer. This emphasis incorporates classroom teaching and internships in both The Hartt School Community Division's dance classes and in area public schools. Students in the pedagogy program participate fully in the many performance opportunities available to Hartt's dancers. This program offers future dance teachers the opportunity to develop their ability to function as engaged and educated citizens throughout their careers.
