Cinema
You have the opportunity to study film as a literary art form and learn production skills to create your own movie.   Here you can take advantage of opportunities to study film during a semester abroad or get additional experience through an internship at a production company in Connecticut, New York, or Boston.

Our alumni have gone to work at television networks and film production companies as directors, producers, and as directors of international film festivals.

Psychology
If you are interested in studying psychology and are planning a career in business, industry, education, health services, personnel work, or in any field involving human relations, the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program is for you. It’s also the first step if you are interested in becoming a psychologist, which requires graduate training after you complete the undergraduate major.

Politics and Government
If you are planning a career in law, government, the civil services, politics, journalism, or the nonprofit sector, or policy analysis, our politics and government program gives you the opportunity to explore your interests and get hands-on experience before you graduate.
Politics and government is the study of policy, government, and law giving you an understanding about the processes by which power, authority, influence, control, freedom, wealth, and other political resources are competitively pursued, captured, and distributed. You also study how these become public policies, part of government, and the law.  

Hartt’s music history program enables you to explore Western music in its historical and cultural contexts. From broad survey courses to in-depth special seminars, majors, minors, you gain a comprehensive understanding of all periods of Western music.

As an important feature of our curriculum is flexible elective courses that are suited to your interests and needs, our electives are often designed with our current students in mind. To that end, courses offered within the last two years have included opera history, string quartet literature, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory and analysis, medievalism in modern media, cognitive psychology, and critical editing; students may also take courses on jazz and African-American musical traditions in the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division.

In addition to our rigorous coursework, you will participate in a number of our performance organizations, including our Baroque ensemble, the Collegium Musicum. Hartt’s wide collection of early instruments, including recorders, Renaissance lutes and flutes, harpsichords, clavichord, baroque bows, shawms, and sackbuts, are available for use and provide you with an active and creative learning environment.

Within the music history major, you will choose between scholarship and research emphasis or performance practices emphasis. Our scholarship and research emphasis systematically investigates various elements of music in written papers, employing a rigorous scholarly approach. Our performance practice emphasis combines your interest in performing with the study of treatises, earlier performance techniques, ornamentation, and related issues.

The Marketing major includes core business classes, to give you a background in all areas of for-profit companies and nonprofits. Then, delve deeper into the marketing field with more specialized classes. You may also choose a concentration in International Marketing, Marketing Communications, Retailing, and Services Marketing to focus your career path. An internship ties it all together, giving you hands-on experience for your resume and skills to use in your first job.

Architectural Design AndTechnology
The Architectural Design + Technology (AD+T) program is a rigorous academic program that prepares you for a variety of careers in architecture and the construction industry. The focus of the program is the design studio in which the technical, structural, and liberal arts courses are integrated through the creative process in the design of progressively more complex architectural projects. A strong component of liberal arts, with particular emphasis on communications skills, as well as multiple electives in the later years, ensures that students who pursue this program will have a challenging architectural education that prepares you for your career path. You will gain a broad understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary for entry into architecture firms or the building industries or to pursue advanced degrees in architecture and related disciplines.

Music Management
When you decide to major in music management, you have the desire to pursue a strong musical and business course of study.  Playing a musical instrument or being a vocalist is required for entrance to the program. This can include classical instruments or classical voice, jazz instruments or voice, or commercial instruments (bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, or voice.)  

You will receive training in music theory, piano and keyboard, and music history, as well as weekly one hour lessons and coaching sessions with teachers in the performance area.  This combined with arts management and business courses give you the career ready skills to enter the industry.

Not only will you participate in music management events, but you also have the opportunity to participate in many of the large ensembles that make up Hartt’s music training program.
