Undergraduate International Pathway Program (Extended 4-Semester) - Bachelor of Music in Music History

Hartt’s music history program enables you to explore Western music in its historical and cultural contexts. From broad survey courses to in-depth special seminars, majors, minors, you gain a comprehensive understanding of all periods of Western music.

As an important feature of our curriculum is flexible elective courses that are suited to your interests and needs, our electives are often designed with our current students in mind. To that end, courses offered within the last two years have included opera history, string quartet literature, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory and analysis, medievalism in modern media, cognitive psychology, and critical editing; students may also take courses on jazz and African-American musical traditions in the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division.

In addition to our rigorous coursework, you will participate in a number of our performance organizations, including our Baroque ensemble, the Collegium Musicum. Hartt’s wide collection of early instruments, including recorders, Renaissance lutes and flutes, harpsichords, clavichord, baroque bows, shawms, and sackbuts, are available for use and provide you with an active and creative learning environment.

Within the music history major, you will choose between scholarship and research emphasis or performance practices emphasis. Our scholarship and research emphasis systematically investigates various elements of music in written papers, employing a rigorous scholarly approach. Our performance practice emphasis combines your interest in performing with the study of treatises, earlier performance techniques, ornamentation, and related issues.

Health Sciences - Pre-Podiatry
The BS/DPM program is for the academically outstanding student with strong, realistic motivation toward the podiatric profession. Initial study at the University of Hartford allows you to complete the general education and basic science requirements for the BS in health science degree and the prerequisites necessary for professional study.

The BS degree is awarded by the University of Hartford following the successful completion of the first year of graduate study.  Students who are not in the accelerated program typically complete the BS degree in four years at the University of Hartford.

The podiatry program requires four years of combined academic and clinical training leading to the DPM degree, which is a prerequisite for licensure eligibility in the United States. The New York College of Podiatric Medicine provides students with an accredited four-year professional podiatry curriculum.

Health Sciences - Pre-Professional

The pre-professional track of the health sciences program prepares you for professional graduate study in fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, physician assistant, or pharmacy. You can pursue the degree on a full- or part-time basis, and you can enter the program as a freshman or a transfer student.The pre-professional track of the health sciences program prepares you for professional graduate study in fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, physician assistant, or pharmacy. The program combines a strong science foundation with a variety of electives that allow you to explore different health-related topics. If you’re interested in a career in health care but aren’t sure which area to pursue, the Health Sciences program may be a good fit for you. Health Sciences is also available as a minor.

Our health sciences program grounds you in the liberal arts with a firm foundation in the sciences, while providing a broad overview of the health care system. By majoring in health sciences, you can prepare for future study in a wide range of health care careers.

Although this is a non-clinical program, it will prepare you for graduate programs in fields such as medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, optometry, chiropractic, pharmacy, or podiatry.

Elementary Education
As an elementary education student, you will complete a subject major and may select any discipline offered by the University of Hartford or an interdisciplinary behavioral studies major. Your principal preparation, however, is the professional core comprising two full semesters of integrated professional practicum experience and one full semester of student teaching in public school settings.

Students who successfully complete the elementary education undergraduate program and the specified Praxis II examination(s) are eligible, on recommendation of the University, for Connecticut certification to teach first grade through sixth grade.

Students preparing for certification in elementary education have the option to enroll in our program integrating a special education core, leading to a dual certificate. This would be recommended in order to include special education students in a regular classroom.

Instrumental Performance - Clarinet

This diverse program encompasses key aspects of engineering that deal with the application of mechanics to the design of machines. Pursue careers in industries such as automotive, aerospace, or power-generation, as well as those focused on noise control, mechatronics, and biomedical applications. Actor Training
The actor training major challenges you to expand both your craft and your creative imagination so that you can be successful in a broad range of theatrical styles from the contemporary to the classical. A carefully planned progression of acting, voice and speech, and movement classes stimulates your talent and builds the capacity to be bold and innovative. Fourth-year actor training students audition for roles in the Hartford Stage Company’s season, including its annual production of A Christmas Carol.
