Our philosophy regarding percussion education is to be as all-inclusive as possible. As a Hartt student, you will typically study solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire, as well as improvisation, drum-set, and percussion instruments from other cultures (particularly from Africa, the Middle East, Cuba, Brazil, and Trinidad). We routinely hire guest teachers with focused areas of expertise in order to compliment our more traditional offerings. As a result, Hartt percussion alumni have been very successful in finding a variety of jobs throughout the country.

With an average enrollment of about 15 students, the Hartt percussion program fosters a healthy exchange of ideas and perspectives among the students and allows for personalized attention from the percussion faculty. The teaching/learning experience extends beyond the boundaries of applied lessons, as the Hartt percussion faculty employs an "open door" policy with the students--we are here to serve you.

The Hartt percussion program enjoys a rich tradition of excellence and diversity dating back more than fifty years, distinguishing The Hartt School as having one of the first percussion programs and percussion ensembles in the country. Founded and directed by Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame member Alexander Lepak from 1947-91, the Hartt percussion program has been directed by Benjamin Toth since 1992.

The International Pathway Program (IPP) is your route to a degree from the highly ranked University of Hartford. With our program, you will develop the skills to progress to the graduate degree of your choice – and graduate on time. We provide you with the best possible start to your degree program, ensuring that you go on to find academic, social and personal success as a college student in the US.

The IPP is open to students who have proven their academic ability but need to strengthen their English skills to achieve positive results in the collegiate environment. You will learn about the subjects you love, while being able to dedicate time to developing your English.

Jazz Studies
Hartt students perform both on and off campus and have opportunities to perform and interact with internationally recognized jazz musicians in our Visiting Artist Series.

Goals of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz

• To examine and explore the history and origins of jazz music and the innovators who propelled the evolution of the art form.
• To develop musicianship through jazz theory, ear training, keyboard skills, ensemble playing, composing, improvisation arranging, and in public performance.
• To obtain an understanding of elements and structure of music and how they are used in the creation of a jazz performance.
• To gain insight on the business of music as a jazz musician.
• To focus on professionalism that encompasses punctuality, attention to detail, respect for other art forms and its artists, and a consistent daily work ethic.

Finance
The finance major gives you a foundation in corporate finance, investments, portfolio management, and international finance. And, pursue your interests in more specialized areas such as entrepreneurial finance, money and banking, portfolio management, and real estate finance.

Exercise Science
The Exercise Science program combines classroom, laboratory and internship experiences that will give you a comprehensive understanding of physical health, fitness and human performance. You will learn how to recognize and assess metabolic/physical, cardiovascular and pulmonary functions, and design and implement treatment plans for clients that improve their physical fitness and health.

You’ll also participate in internships designed to promote career readiness or preparation for graduate education in areas such as sports medicine, strength and conditioning, personal training and clinical research. As a UHart student, you’ll have opportunities to work with the University’s Division I athletic teams in these internships.

Sociology

Our sociology program is designed to increase your understanding of factors that determine social relationships and social organization. You take courses that cover current social issues like race relations, inequality, health care, gender, and modern family life. We encourage you to participate in an individually designed internships so you can combine your academics with your future career interests.

Cinema
You have the opportunity to study film as a literary art form and learn production skills to create your own movie.   Here you can take advantage of opportunities to study film during a semester abroad or get additional experience through an internship at a production company in Connecticut, New York, or Boston.

Our alumni have gone to work at television networks and film production companies as directors, producers, and as directors of international film festivals.

Violin
You will join a tight-knit community of artists who are perfecting their craft. Through personal attention and mentorship from Hartt’s accomplished faculty members, you will develop innovative ideas and career ready skills. Learn about studying violin at Hartt, including undergraduate and graduate admission and audition requirements and faculty information.

When you choose to study piano at Hartt, you will be immersed in a well-rounded, comprehensive course of study designed to prepare students for professional opportunities.

Hartt offers you the traditional music offerings, intense private lessons, a strong piano pedagogy component, and experience in accompanying.

Flute
To enrich pedagogy skills, the Hartt flute studio uses a mentoring system that pairs an undergraduate student with a graduate flutist.  They meet together for a minimum of two hours a week to work in duets, resolve any problems revealed in Techniques Class, and for the chance to do research and get feedback from a partner. This gives the graduate students a chance to develop and refine their teaching techniques before leaving school, while the undergraduates benefit from the additional “one-on-one” help in between lessons and get to know fellow flute students more quickly.

Pairs rotate every 4 weeks so everyone has the opportunity to meet and work together, creating a true collaborative atmosphere in the flute studio. The students are collegial and supportive, each gaining more from these additional opportunities to participate with their peers than they would on their own.

Music Management
When you decide to major in music management, you have the desire to pursue a strong musical and business course of study.  Playing a musical instrument or being a vocalist is required for entrance to the program. This can include classical instruments or classical voice, jazz instruments or voice, or commercial instruments (bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, or voice.)  

You will receive training in music theory, piano and keyboard, and music history, as well as weekly one hour lessons and coaching sessions with teachers in the performance area.  This combined with arts management and business courses give you the career ready skills to enter the industry.

Not only will you participate in music management events, but you also have the opportunity to participate in many of the large ensembles that make up Hartt’s music training program.
