Mechanical Engineering

This diverse program encompasses key aspects of engineering that deal with the application of mechanics to the design of machines. Pursue careers in industries such as automotive, aerospace, or power-generation, as well as those focused on noise control, mechatronics, and biomedical applications. Select one of six concentrations to expand your knowledge in a niche area to bring to the field, including acoustics, computational, energy engineering and sustainability, manufacturing, robotics, and turbomachinery are available.

Instrumental Performance - Flute
To enrich pedagogy skills, the Hartt flute studio uses a mentoring system that pairs an undergraduate student with a graduate flutist.  They meet together for a minimum of two hours a week to work in duets, resolve any problems revealed in Techniques Class, and for the chance to do research and get feedback from a partner. This gives the graduate students a chance to develop and refine their teaching techniques before leaving school, while the undergraduates benefit from the additional “one-on-one” help in between lessons and get to know fellow flute students more quickly.

Health Sciences
The Health Sciences program prepares you for professional or graduate study in a range of health-related fields such as occupational therapy, speech pathology, or public health. The program combines a strong science foundation with a variety of electives that allow you to explore different health-related topics. If you’re interested in a career in health care but aren’t sure which area to pursue, the Health Sciences program may be a good fit for you. Health Sciences is also available as a minor.

Biomedical Engineering
The biomedical engineering program prepares you to work in today’s healthcare industry and learn how to support professionals, hospitals, and medical offices by creating and maintaining important tools and resources. Discover how to design and build biomedical equipment and devices for diagnosing medical problems and improving health for those in need.

Biomedical engineers speak two languages: that of the engineer and that of the health professional. They understand what is involved in examining people, evaluating their health, and understanding what is available to improve their quality of life. They also comprehend the science and mathematics behind these areas and can evaluate the potential of new devices and methods to improve on current technologies.

Physics
Our Bachelor of Arts in Physics is the perfect choice if you want to study physics but are not necessarily intending to become a physicist. The program gives you a strong scientific background and analytical and problem-solving skills to pursue a variety of related careers. You customize your degree by choosing electives that help you explore your career options.

Printmaking

You will learn the basics of the major techniques and must achieve mastery in lithography and etching. Black-and-white and color processes are taught in all media within the program. You are also encouraged to pursue other areas of the printmaking curriculum, such as relief, monotype, letterpress printing, and book arts. The work will lead to your senior exhibition and help prepare you for graduate school or a career in printmaking and the arts.

Lectures, demonstrations, and workshops with well-known visiting artists and master printers further enhance the curriculum, including the annual Hartford Print Workshop. This workshop brings in artists who work with students and master printers to create editioned prints in the HAS printmaking studios.

French Horn
Through weekly privates lessons, and weekly studio classes, you will focus on small ensemble and solo playing. At Hartt, you will receive comprehensive musical training while developing innovative ideas and career ready skills while gaining exposure to nationally and internationally recognized musicians (recent guest artists include Gene Pokorney of CSO, Julie Landsman of The Met, Ray Mase of ABQ.)

Chemistry

UHart’s Chemistry Department offers major programs designed to give you a thorough foundation in all areas of chemistry, and is a great place to study if you are planning for a career in chemistry, biochemistry, the medical profession, environmental law, forensics, food science, chemical physics, or any other related discipline.

With its heavy concentration in science and mathematics, our Bachelor of Science in Chemistry prepares you for positions in the chemical industry or for graduate study in specialized areas of chemistry.

Data Science
If you enjoy using math and computers to analyze data that can be used to find solutions to real-world problems or to influence business decisions, our new Bachelor of Science in Data Science is a good fit for you! Data scientists are in high demand as corporations are increasingly reliant on data to make informed decisions. The overall well-being of a community is also dependent on the ability to process and interpret important data to help address a broad range of societal issues.

The Data Science program provides you with the analytical and quantitative skills that are needed for a variety of careers that are growing at a fast pace.

What work does a data scientist perform? They create new processes for data modeling, algorithms, predictive models, and custom analysis. The information they extract helps businesses and organizations solve complex problems. Data Science is an emerging field that has numerous applications in many career areas including the sciences, business, engineering, health sciences, social sciences, and even the music industry. In fact, data science can be used anywhere!
