TROY’s American/Latin American history degree gives you the opportunity to study under the instruction of qualified faculty members who are dedicated to help you develop the skills of critical thinking and rigorous research. You can choose from an array of courses that will take you on a journey through the Old and New South, Jacksonian Era and Colonial America. If war-time America interests you, there are courses on the American Revolution, World War II, Civil, Vietnam and Cold Wars.  

With your focus on Latin America, your courses will include the history of colonial to modern Latin America. Classes in both areas will introduce you to the origins, development and character of the major centers of civilizations and their relationships to one another. Through your courses, you will dive deep into classes that focus on topics such as the study of alcohol and drug use, politics, infectious diseases, gender, religion and more. And, you’ll also experience dynamic teaching models that will help you experience history through gaming, movies and music.

TROY’s bachelor’s in criminal justice will provide you with exciting programs that will help prepare you for a wide variety of career opportunities. Within your courses, you’ll learn about the criminal justice system from knowledgeable instructors with real-life experiences. These faculty members will help you gain a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement, the courts and corrections and equip you with the knowledge needed to assist in shaping criminal justice policy.

As a criminal justice major, you’ll study the agencies and processes involved in the administration of criminal justice. You’ll also dive into the areas of law enforcement, corrections, constitutional law, criminology and law and criminal procedure. These required courses serve as an academic cornerstone as you explore each area of criminal justice to find the perfect fit for you, whether that’s as a police officer, a crime scene investigator or pursuing a career as an attorney. You can also add value and skills to your degree by choosing to minor in digital forensics or homeland security.

Every day, the United States continues to partner with other countries to develop industry with various non-English speaking nations at home and abroad. Because of this, individuals working in the areas of trade, tourism, media and science are discovering the need to learn a second language as the world continues building its global market place. TROY's SLI program is a 31- to 33-hour program—offered in thesis and non-thesis track options—that focuses on preparing domestic and international students for future careers in second language teaching.

Even in English-speaking countries, such as Great Britain, the United States and Australia, there has been an increase in the number of immigrants coming from non-English speaking countries. This means opportunities to find jobs for ESL teachers are quite promising.

As a graduate of TROY’s surveying and geomatics sciences program, you’ll have opportunities to work as a surveyor with some of the most modern and precise satellite navigation systems and measurement devices. You’ll also gain a knowledge and understanding of legal issues ranging from boundary location to land development and environmental regulation.

TROY surveying and geomatics sciences graduates play key roles in the design and construction of the nation’s buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, water-supply systems and utilities. Depending on your area of expertise, you may find yourself designing and building computer systems for purposes such as land management, resource management, utility organization, traffic control and urban planning. Working as a surveyor, you can also help less developed countries change their land ownership systems to promote economic growth and democracy. In fact, many surveyors also work toward environmental protection and efficient utilization of the earth’s resources.

TROY is home to the only Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited surveying and geomatics sciences program in the state of Alabama. In fact, the program is one of the few in the Southeastern United States. The Troy University School of Accountancy is committed to providing students the accounting education required to enter the accounting profession and to pursue a successful professional career. The Troy University School of Accountancy offers an undergraduate accounting curriculum that provides the foundation for entering the accounting profession in the public, private, or governmental area. An undergraduate degree in accounting will also give you a strong foundation in business-related topics such as marketing, finance, and management. Earning your degree in Accounting gives you flexibility in choosing employment or furthering your education. If you choose immediate employment, you will have the skills to obtain an entry-level position in a public, private, or governmental entity. If you choose to further your education, you will have the coursework necessary to enter graduate programs in accounting such as the Master of Accountancy. As a TROY student, you will have an opportunity to seek a paid internship at one of the many local, regional and national firms or private company businesses and governmental agencies that recruit students from Troy University. The internships generally begin in January and last approximately three months. Importantly, the internship program is part of the accounting curriculum, so participation in the internship program does not delay graduation.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in the recruiting activities sponsored by the School of Accountancy. Our annual Accountancy Day and Meet-the-Firms events provide networking opportunities with Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firms as well as governmental agencies and private company industry representatives. You will have the opportunity to enhance your interview skills through workshops co-sponsored with the Alabama Society of CPAs, Becker CPA Review, and ITAC Solutions. As a TROY student, you may also join the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)—one of the most prestigious professional organizations in the United States—as well as the Alabama Society of CPAs.

A bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology provides the academic and field experience to prepare students for such rewarding careers in marine science as conducting research at universities and marine laboratories and working for industry or state and federal environmental agencies. The program of study includes two summers at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab taking courses such as Vertebrate Zoology, Oceanography, Marine Ecology and Marine Botany, among other choices. During the freshman and sophomore years, students complete their foundation courses, which prepare them for advanced study. Students complete their upper-level biology and physics classes during their junior and senior years at the Troy Campus.

A bachelor’s degree in Economics with a concentration in financial economics is designed for students with an interest in banking. Students will receive a strong educational foundation in economics with a particular emphasis in modern finance. Topics such as financial statement analysis, risk and return and time value of money will complement the core theories of economics. Financial economics students will be well prepared for applications such as asset valuation, capital budgeting, long-term and short-term financing and investment decisions.

The Division of Economics and Finance is also home to the Manuel H. Johnson Center for Political Economy. The Johnson Center provides a dynamic and rigorous education program focused on the imperatives of free market and individual liberty as well as relevant policy research on current and local issues. Students with an interest in the free enterprise system will benefit from engagement with the Johnson Center and Troy University’s financial economics program.

Students with a background in financial economics will find employment opportunities within both the private and public sectors. Entry-level positions in the private sector include corporate finance, brokerage firms, financial consulting firms and financial institutions such as banks, insurance companies and mutual funds. Graduates may also find employment within government regulatory agencies such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), Federal Reserve System and state banking department.

Students may also choose to pursue a graduate education. An undergraduate degree in economics with a concentration in financial economics is an excellent foundation for graduate study in business, finance, law, public policy or economics.

Physics graduates generally see approximately 94 percent employment rates one year after graduation. Roughly half of the graduates go into the private sector and enter the workforce in the fields of engineering, civilian government laboratory research, computer or information systems, natural sciences or other science, technology engineering and mathematics fields.

The physics major requires 65 hours in general studies, 18 hours in a minor subject of study and 37 hours in the major field. The major includes a solid foundation in fundamental physics and an up-to-date curriculum taught by an expert faculty committed to helping students succeed.

TROY physics faculty members have expertise in theoretical physics, optics and nuclear physics and provide individualized attention for students. Faculty members frequently perform experimental demonstrations during classes to help ground student’s knowledge in real-world phenomena.

Physics majors will take coursework in mechanics, modern physics, optics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism and quantum mechanics. In addition, the department offers advanced undergraduate courses in special relativity, general relativity, black holes and nuclear physics. Students will also have the opportunity to design and run undergraduate laboratory experiments.

Graduates of the TROY physics program will be equipped to:

• Understand principles that govern the interaction between matter, energy, time and space.
• Apply knowledge of physics to problems in astrophysics, electronics, optics, engineering and nuclear and atomic phenomena.
