A bachelor’s degree in chemistry opens many avenues and provides many career options. Nationwide, about 60 percent of graduates enter the workforce in industries such as chemical, food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Others enter graduate school to get a Ph.D. in chemistry or work in higher education and scientific research and development. Still, others enter a medical profession such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and chiropractic. Chemistry majors can also find jobs teaching high school chemistry. If a career in physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical exercise testing and prescription, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, health-fitness/wellness, strength and conditioning or nutrition is in your future, a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science is a perfect fit. This competitive program includes concentrations in pre-health professions, health and wellness and nutrition, and incorporates coursework from five academic departments spread across two colleges.

With an emphasis on preparation for entry into graduate health profession schools in the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy and physician assistant, you will be prepared to successfully enter into graduate health profession schools nationwide. Upon completion of the program, you will also be prepared to sit for certification examinations offered through the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association and other organizations in the related fields of health and fitness, clinical exercise testing and strength and conditioning. Students in this program will:

• Demonstrate a sound foundational knowledge and understanding of the principles of biology, chemistry and nutrition and an advanced understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
• Demonstrate basic laboratory skills pertaining to assessments, laboratory methods, sound experimental and analytical practices, data acquisition and reporting in the exercise sciences with emphasis on physiology and biomechanics.
• Participate in the research process including literature reviews, data collection and data analysis related to the importance and influence of physical activity, nutrition and exercise on health.
• Understand and apply the principles of exercise testing and prescription to diverse populations at various developmental stages and under a range of health conditions.
• Demonstrate requisite skills and abilities for meaningful employment in exercise science-related areas or pursue graduate studies in an exercise science-related area.

The Division of Economics and Finance works with several organizations such as the American Institute for Economic Research, the American Enterprise Institute, the Cato Institute, the Institute for Humane Studies, the Institute for Justice and the Tax Foundation to offer great internship opportunities to students pursuing degrees in economics.

The Division of Economics and Finance is also home to the Manuel H. Johnson Center for Political Economy. The Johnson Center provides a dynamic and rigorous education program focused on the imperatives of free markets and individual liberty as well as relevant policy research on current and local issues. Students interested in the free enterprise system will enjoy the programs offered by the Johnson Center.

Students with a background in economics will find employment opportunities in both the private and public sectors. Entry level positions in the private sector include marketing research, management consulting, banking, investing and insurance. TROY’s American/Latin American history degree gives you the opportunity to study under the instruction of qualified faculty members who are dedicated to help you develop the skills of critical thinking and rigorous research. As you work your way toward earning your degree, you will be exposed to a wide range of Western civilization and U.S. history. You can choose from an array of courses that will take you on a journey through the Old and New South, Jacksonian Era and Colonial America. If war-time America interests you, there are courses on the American Revolution, World War II, Civil, Vietnam and Cold Wars.  

With your focus on Latin America, your courses will include the history of colonial to modern Latin America. Classes in both areas will introduce you to the origins, development and character of the major centers of civilizations and their relationships to one another. A bachelor’s degree in Economics with a concentration in financial economics is designed for students with an interest in banking. Students will receive a strong educational foundation in economics with a particular emphasis in modern finance. Topics such as financial statement analysis, risk and return and time value of money will complement the core theories of economics. Financial economics students will be well prepared for applications such as asset valuation, capital budgeting, long-term and short-term financing and investment decisions.
