Sustainable Food Systems will train you to approach key food system challenges critically and innovatively — from agriculture and production, processing, retail consumption and waste. Sustainable food businesses, nonprofits and policymakers need more thinkers, strategists, planners and activists to help lead the population in utilizing, yet preserving our precious natural resources.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

Be part of solving one of humanity’s most critical grand challenges — the global demand for food and fiber. Feeding the population, which is expected to grow by 2.3 billion by 2050, will require raising overall food production by 70 percent. Veterinarians are needed to respond to diseases that can be transferred to humans because it is estimated that 75 percent of new emerging diseases are zoonotic. You will help care for the 100 million companion animals that are members of our families and help solve the problems related to the 10 million cats and dogs that enter shelters each year. Graduates of the pre-veterinary medicine and animal biosciences major recognize that healthy, productive livestock and pets lead to healthy people.

The Nutrition and Medical Sciences major provides students with a strong science foundation focused in biology, physiology, and chemistry, and is particularly designed for those expecting to pursue an advanced degree in graduate school, medical school, dental school, or other health-related professions (e.g. physician assistant, pharmacy, physical therapy). The core sciences paired with nutrition courses build knowledge about the relationships between biological and chemical processes, nutrition, metabolism and health.

The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation and multimedia creative activities. Many students in this major continue on to graduate studies in composition at well-known institutions with the goal of working in higher education or to compose vocationally.

The Composition Studio is a vibrant and highly active group within the University of Delaware’s School of Music. Composition students remain active as performers and are able to participate in all of the school’s ensembles and productions. Diversity in compositional style and philosophy is encouraged, as is interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation. Close association with the theory and musicology areas, in addition to the performance area, provides for a well-rounded academic education where music composition students can enhance and support their creative work with specialized research and performance.

Have you ever considered how countries navigate global politics, form partnerships or solve global problems? In international relations you will learn about global and comparative politics. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in all fields, like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

As an interdisciplinary program, all majors are required to complete five core courses: Introduction to American Politics or Introduction to Global Politics, one economics course, one history course, one geography course and an advanced language course. Beyond the core courses, you will choose one topical concentration in development and political economy, diplomacy and global order, societies and beliefs or U.S. foreign policy and national security, and one regional specialization in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America or the Middle East. International relations can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepares you to engage an increasingly complex world.

Health and Wellness with a Nutrition Focus

The Nutrition major is a good fit for those interested in working with individuals to educate them about nutrition and promote a healthy diet. In addition to a foundation in social sciences, chemistry, biology and the science of nutrition, this major allows students to combine the study of nutrition with other academic majors/minors, preparing them to promote health and wellness among individuals and communities

Students pursuing the B.S. in Mathematics acquire depth in several key areas of mathematics, suitable as preparation for graduate study as well as immediate technically-oriented careers in business and government. Students interested in acquiring breadth in the liberal arts and less depth in mathematics can pursue the B.A. in Mathematics. Training in mathematics develops analytical and problem-solving skills that can be widely applied, and students with a degree in Mathematics frequently find rewarding careers that do not use the word “mathematician” in the job title.

Anthropologists study how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. They study people and primates face-to-face as well as past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. They examine the origins of humans as cultural beings, the processes that create particular cultures and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others.

The secondary social studies education program comprises seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. We produce middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. We offer an interdisciplinary major with the same name as our college. There has never been a more immediate and pressing need for agriculture and natural resource professionals than now. The field of agriculture and natural resources needs generalists to educate others, and address real-world problems of feeding the world and protecting the planet. With a working farm right on main campus, students have unparalleled access to a 350-acre classroom, where they gain practical experience by actively testing their knowledge in real-world settings. Students regularly engage with faculty from each of the college’s departments for hands-on experiences, research opportunities and connections to communities.
