The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music provides students an opportunity to synthesize intensive study of music with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. The program includes training in music theory, music history/literature, performance ensembles and applied music. Rigorous coursework in music is balanced by significant opportunities for training, research and development in other academic areas. This program is particularly well suited to students with broad ranging artistic and academic interests, and who wish to utilize their music education to advance their careers in unique directions.

Women and Gender Studies majors explore the past and current status of women around the world and the formation of gender and its intersections with other relations of power such as sexuality, race, class, nationality, religion, ability and age.

Topics are addressed within the context of a transnational world and from perspectives diverse as history, sociology, political science, linguistics, economics, anthropology, literary and cultural studies, philosophy, science, religion and the arts. The department offers a B.A. degree in Women and Gender Studies with an Honors Degree option and minors in Domestic Violence Prevention and Services (DVPS) and Sexualities and Gender Studies (SGST).  Majors may apply to complete a concentration in Domestic Violence Prevention and Services or in Women in Global Perspective.  In addition, internships are available providing students with the opportunity to integrate what they have learned in the classroom with practical competencies that can only be gained from work experience. Students enrolled in our programs receive frequent customized advisement based on their course of study and career goals.

Conserving insects, the foundation of the world’s biodiversity, is the first step towards protecting the planet. Insects are becoming extinct faster than any other group of species. From their role as major pest species threatening global food security to their use as a nutritious protein source that could help feed the world, the integrity and maintenance of insect diversity is one of the grand challenges facing coming generations. UD’s Early Childhood Education major prepares students to help young children--with and without special need--to reach their full potential. Graduates can teach in public and private schools and child care programs, become early interventionists and advocates, or work for community service agencies.

Our coursework focuses on child development--teaching students how to identify appropriate instructional strategies and materials that meet each child’s social, cognitive, and physical characteristics. Early childhood education students gain real-world experience, on our children’s campus and in community agencies and schools, working with young children from diverse backgrounds and with special needs.

As an economics student, you will study how markets work to determine what is produced, how it is produced and how income is distributed. You will explore subjects like the role and impact of international trade, the effect of monopolies on the economy and the problems of unemployment and inflation.

The Nutrition and Medical Sciences major provides students with a strong science foundation focused in biology, physiology, and chemistry, and is particularly designed for those expecting to pursue an advanced degree in graduate school, medical school, dental school, or other health-related professions (e.g. physician assistant, pharmacy, physical therapy). The core sciences paired with nutrition courses build knowledge about the relationships between biological and chemical processes, nutrition, metabolism and health.

You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in all fields, like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

As an interdisciplinary program, all majors are required to complete five core courses: Introduction to American Politics or Introduction to Global Politics, one economics course, one history course, one geography course and an advanced language course. Beyond the core courses, you will choose one topical concentration in development and political economy, diplomacy and global order, societies and beliefs or U.S. foreign policy and national security, and one regional specialization in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America or the Middle East. International relations can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepares you to engage an increasingly complex world.
