Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Our goal is to inspire our future educators to teach passionately and knowledgeably so that all students are included in the mosaic of the past, present and future. By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

We offer an interdisciplinary major with the same name as our college. There has never been a more immediate and pressing need for agriculture and natural resource professionals than now. The field of agriculture and natural resources needs generalists to educate others, and address real-world problems of feeding the world and protecting the planet. With a working farm right on main campus, students have unparalleled access to a 350-acre classroom, where they gain practical experience by actively testing their knowledge in real-world settings. Students regularly engage with faculty from each of the college’s departments for hands-on experiences, research opportunities and connections to communities.

Have you ever considered how countries navigate global politics, form partnerships or solve global problems? In international relations you will learn about global and comparative politics. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in all fields, like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

As an interdisciplinary program, all majors are required to complete five core courses: Introduction to American Politics or Introduction to Global Politics, one economics course, one history course, one geography course and an advanced language course. Beyond the core courses, you will choose one topical concentration in development and political economy, diplomacy and global order, societies and beliefs or U.S. foreign policy and national security, and one regional specialization in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America or the Middle East. International relations can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepares you to engage an increasingly complex world.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

The criminal justice major offers a liberal arts approach to crime, law and justice that integrates theory, research and legal analysis. It emphasizes the history of crime and the criminal justice system, the structure of its institutions and problems faced by professionals and leaders at every level, from the halls of Congress to the urban police beat. Criminal justice is a multidisciplinary field that draws together perspectives from sociology, political science, psychology, history, philosophy and law in an effort to understand major issues surrounding the causes of criminal behavior, inequalities in the criminal justice system and the organization of criminal justice institutions. As a student in this program, you will develop the analytic tools to address the real world challenges of the criminal justice system and prepare yourself for the widest possible range of life ambitions and career goals.

Studying environmental science at UD, you will learn how natural processes shape the natural environment and how humans impact nature. If you are passionate about the outdoors, the environmental science major can help you find solutions to environmental issues like habitat loss, sustainable development, water quality, biodiversity, climate change, renewable energy, and more. Environmental science takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying the atmosphere, ocean, earth, and ecosystems, which you then develop into a specialty through studying one of the concentrations listed below. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, environmental science jobs are predicted to grow 8% faster than the overall job market average between 2019 and 2029.
