Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow by 11 percent between 2016 and 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our civil engineering program prepares students with foundations in math, science, and engineering through required courses. Then, students take technical electives in the focus areas of structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, railroad, or ocean and coastal engineering. Minors in civil engineering, environmental engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental sustainability are also offered.

Our faculty are active researchers, ensuring that the content of the undergraduate program is constantly renewed and maintained at a challenging technical level and integrates discovery learning. Opportunities abound for undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit. Research in the department covers a broad range of topics with particular strengths in bridge design, construction, evaluation and rehabilitation; applications of composite materials to concrete, steel, and earth structures; field studies and numerical and physical modeling of wave/shoreline interactions; intelligent transportation systems; management and operation of civil infrastructure systems; natural disaster risk modeling and sustainability.

The English major offers a practical, multidisciplinary, and flexible array of courses that prepare students for a variety of career paths, including business, law, government, science, the arts, healthcare, education, and multi-media production. Our students learn to write clearly, to speak persuasively, and to read with care and precision, all qualities required for the leadership roles of many professions.

Comparative literature brings an international and intercultural perspective to bear on the study of literary themes, forms, movements and relations, as well as the interrelations between different national literatures and other disciplines. The Comparative Literature Program provides students the opportunity to design a course of study allowing specialization in two or more literatures.

• The Business Leadership track includes courses that focus on leading change in businesses and understanding different approaches to leadership and team dynamics.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: some become teachers, translators or interpreters while others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services or other areas of international business. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising and other communication industries provide further outlets for language skills that our students couple with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross and the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

With the rapid advances in information technologies, the volume of data that are generated has tremendously increased in recent years. The data come from everywhere: online transactions, mobile apps, sensors, video-capturing systems, social media and more, and are arriving at a scale of terabytes (or even petabytes). Studying the growth of emerging markets, consumer behavior, production schedules or portfolio optimization are important jobs in a free market economy. The ability to model loan defaults, price insurance products for life, health or property, or model uncertainty and risk in other economic activities, is a highly prized skill. The Mathematics and Economics program trains students to model uncertainty, with a focus on the financial services sector and the economy. The degree is also excellent preparation for students planning to pursue a graduate degree in Economics, as a strong background in mathematics is a must for admission into the top graduate programs.

Environmental science takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying the atmosphere, ocean, earth, and ecosystems, which you then develop into a specialty through studying one of the concentrations listed below.
