The B.A. in European Studies blends the humanities and the social sciences. Offered jointly by the Departments of History; Political Science; and Languages, Literatures and Cultures, this interdisciplinary major combines language training with courses in history, politics and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture (France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Russia are all choices) within a broader transnational European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music or any other subject germane to a student’s chosen focus. Faculty guide students in designing a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target area and Europe as a whole. Study abroad in Europe during a winter session or semester program is also encouraged. The combined effect is a body of knowledge that can launch careers in international business, law school, government agencies, NGOs and a range of graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.

Construction engineers lead the most dynamic phase of civil and environmental engineering projects, from procurement to construction of the physical facility. There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in this field.

Technologies such as building information modeling, virtual reality, and visualization are revolutionizing the industry by providing construction engineers with unprecedented insight into the building process. Facilities can be virtually constructed before ground is broken to help identify potential problems, refine construction techniques, ensure safe and productive job sites, and facilitate success. New processes employing techniques from integrated manufacturing reduce waste and facilitate sequencing of activities through integrated project delivery, while new materials and methods promise to change the way business is done in the future.

We provide our students with the engineering foundation essential for professional licensure, valuable experience through co-op requirements, and formalized training in business essentials through an integrated business certificate program. Together, these elements prepare our students for leadership and success in the construction industry.

Over half of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual, while only one in five U.S. citizens speaks a language other than English. Knowledge of other languages and cultures gives our graduates a competitive advantage in any career, and is highly valued in international business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths in teaching, entertainment and media, government, travel, financial services or international business. Some students enter careers with international or non-governmental organizations such as the International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The sociology major offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Emphasis is placed on inequalities of race, class and gender; social justice; deviance and criminology; social correlates of health and wellbeing; disasters and the environment; and law and society. The major provides students with foundational skills for informed citizenship and active participation in their communities. Sociology teaches a distinctive way of looking at society and offers unique insights into social behavior through research and other opportunities for experiential learning.

The UD Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Program provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and civilization of Ancient Greece and Rome. As a program of study, Ancient Greek and Roman Studies concerns itself with all aspects of ancient Greek and Roman culture and its influence through the Middle Ages and Renaissance up to the present day. The program focuses not just on Greek and Roman language and literature but also on material culture (art history and archaeology); on economic, political, social and intellectual history; and on philosophy, religion and myth. Unlike most other areas of study, Ancient Greek and Roman Studies is truly interdisciplinary and—as such—provides a unique experience for students with many different interests and intended career paths.

Do you have an interest in business but aren’t sure what area of the field to focus on? Food and fiber industries constitute approximately 16 percent of the U.S. economy with a value of over $2.5 trillion and 20 million jobs. The production of food is only a small part of this total, with most of the effort, resources and jobs involved in creating and marketing products to consumers. The Food and Agribusiness Marketing and Management major focuses on the unique aspects of these industries, including food marketing, management and leadership, and entrepreneurship. Not only will you obtain a strong background in business principles, you will graduate with the knowledge of how the agribusiness sector operates and impacts domestic and world economies. The job market is hungry for students well trained in business but who also understand the unique nature and dynamics of the food and fiber industry. In fact, agricultural economics related majors rank second in employability among all college majors

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.
