Learning Chinese will allow students to experience a culture with a history of 5000 years and learn a language spoken by 1.36 billion people.  China has been playing an increasingly important and influential role globally. The ability to use Chinese and to employ knowledge about Chinese culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become import/export broker, assisting with marketing activities, other serves as policy analyst, researching and analyzing information to assist in policy planning. Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; some are employed in government, international travel, or financial services; others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors.

Students completing a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory undergo a rigorous program that prepares them to continue on to graduate study in the field. In addition to working closely with the theory faculty, students receive mentoring and are encouraged to attend and present at regional and national conferences. Students also write an extended research paper on a related topic chosen in consultation with their adviser, in addition to completing studies in cognate fields such as foreign languages, music history and research methods.

?Advanced courses in counterpoint, orchestration, analysis, keyboard harmony and analytical technique seminars exposes our students to a broad array of approaches to understanding, analyzing, hearing, performing and composing music. By offering numerous ways to deepen one’s engagement with music, theory courses provide a solid foundation for musical experiences at the University of Delaware and beyond.

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of the mind as an information processor. It is a relatively new discipline that arose in the mid-20th century from a convergence of conceptual revolutions primarily in psychology, computer science and linguistics. Today, it also draws from fields such as philosophy, neuroscience and anthropology. A central goal of cognitive science is to determine structures and processes that underwrite cognitive tasks such as perception, memory, attention, language and motor control. This, in turn, plays an important role in applied research areas such as artificial intelligence, educational psychology, the science of language and communication.

Discover the fascination of Italy and Italian. Students enrolled in the Italian program will find it to be one of the most rewarding and positive linguistic and cultural experiences imaginable. A dedicated and expert faculty offer dynamic courses in language, literature, culture and civilization, film, history, politics and current events as well as classes in translation. On campus and through study abroad, master the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing – while immersing yourself in the culture of Italy. Prepare for graduate study or for a career in international business, journalism, translation, editing, marketing, travel, teaching or many other fields.

Participate in our study abroad programs which include winter session in the medieval city of Siena, summer in sunny Sorrento, or a semester program in the capital city of Rome. On campus, join the Circolo Italiano club to meet other Italian language students, brush up on your language skills and partake in numerous cultural activities. Outstanding students in the Italian program are awarded each year with induction into Gamma Kappa Alpha, the national Italian honors society.

From the most recent advances in plant molecular biology to the latest methods for growing and maintaining healthy plants, students in the Plant Science major will incorporate these practices with their evolving knowledge of the plant kingdom. If you have a curiosity about how nature and people together shape the environment and what makes one place different from another, majoring in geography will let you examine the physical and social processes that help explain why features on the earth’s surface are located where they are and how people interact with their environment. You will examine the physical properties of the natural environment (water, climate, landforms and vegetation) and the role that human beliefs, activities and decision-making have in shaping the world around us. As you progress, you will select a concentration in a core area of geography—listed below as Areas of Study—to deepen your understanding of important environmental and social issues like climate change, vegetation, environmental degradation, agricultural systems, geopolitical decision-making, human migration and settlement. You will gain marketable skills (such as geographical information systems (GIS), fieldwork, interviewing or computer modeling) through coursework in research design, data collection and data analysis. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the use of geographic information technologies and data to answer environmental and societal questions is driving the job market for geographers at a rate that is almost twice that of all other occupations.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.
