THE POWER OF GEOSPATIAL DATA

To contribute to advances in sustainability and fostering a more equitable society in the future, you will need to learn how to analyze and harness geosptatial data, which is already being generated in every aspect of our society. In this major you will study computer science, electrical engineering, geography and mathematics in a core curriculum that builds strong skills in handling large geospatial and environmental data sets. Having built those foundational skills, you will then develop the deep knowledge and context you will need to succeed in one of five topical concentrations, listed below in Areas of Study. In the capstone course, you will apply data analytics to pressing environmental topics, such as food security, water shortages, climate change and environmental health.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The sociology major offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Emphasis is placed on inequalities of race, class and gender; social justice; deviance and criminology; social correlates of health and wellbeing; disasters and the environment; and law and society. The major provides students with foundational skills for informed citizenship and active participation in their communities. Sociology teaches a distinctive way of looking at society and offers unique insights into social behavior through research and other opportunities for experiential learning.

The management major combines a strong liberal arts foundation with a hands-on professional education that prepares you to think critically, creatively and collaboratively when solutions are needed for challenging problems in business.

In addition, the major gives you flexibility because you can focus on the area of management that’s most relevant to your career goals. You can choose between Business Leadership and Human Resources.

• The Business Leadership track includes courses that focus on leading change in businesses and understanding different approaches to leadership and team dynamics.
• The Human Resources (HR) track includes courses that provide a broad understanding of the functions of HR (such as recruitment, selection and training) as well as how to prepare HR management for the future of business.

Information Systems is an evolving scientific area of study that bridges the gap between business and computer science.

Networks of computers extend human brainpower by creating modes of communication and record keeping that are at once more complex and more convenient than ever before. To be effective, these systems must aid and enhance our business, government and service organizations, which requires a careful understanding of the factors controlling human interactions, as well as the technical potential and limitations of computer systems.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers students a Bachelor of Science major in Information Systems (INSY-BS), which combines business and information technology subjects. The major addresses student demand for courses oriented toward the design of new software systems for business and consumer needs. Students enrolled in the major must fulfill a set of major courses along with 1) a set of business courses (referred to as the business core) and 2) a set of information systems courses (referred to as the information systems core).

The business core emphasizes management and marketing issues. Students are prepared for careers in management and financial matters through courses in accounting, finance, operations management, organizational behavior, and marketing.

The information core stresses the use of computing technology in solving business problems.

Course work includes technological problem solving and project management, as well as a selection of advanced computer science courses designed to prepare students for careers in programming, business telecommunication networks, system development, database systems, and software engineering.

The international business studies (IBS) major is designed to prepare you to conduct business successfully around the world.

By placing equal emphasis on business and international studies, including advanced language training and a semester abroad, the IBS program will teach you to apply business principles to a region of the world in that region’s native language.

This specialized international training will give you excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers as markets continue to become more globalized.

Anthropologists study how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. They study people and primates face-to-face as well as past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. They examine the origins of humans as cultural beings, the processes that create particular cultures and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others.

The secondary social studies education program comprises seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. We produce middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Environmental and Resource Economics applies economic principles to the many and varied environmental and natural resource challenges facing our society today and in the future. In this major, you will study how human decisions impact our environment and natural resources, including issues involving land use, water supply, water quality, air quality, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Do you have an interest in environmental and resource management, economic analysis, or weighing the costs and benefits of alternative environmental policies? We will provide you with a solid foundation in resource economics, business and the environment, topped with a range of data and analytical specialties.
