Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The sociology major offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Emphasis is placed on inequalities of race, class and gender; social justice; deviance and criminology; social correlates of health and wellbeing; disasters and the environment; and law and society. The major provides students with foundational skills for informed citizenship and active participation in their communities. Sociology teaches a distinctive way of looking at society and offers unique insights into social behavior through research and other opportunities for experiential learning.

From the most recent advances in plant molecular biology to the latest methods for growing and maintaining healthy plants, students in the Plant Science major will incorporate these practices with their evolving knowledge of the plant kingdom. The major offers the flexibility to pursue the areas of plant science that best aligns students with their future goals. The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Applied Music is for students intent on a career as a professional musician or music professor within higher education. The applied music degree track is designed to develop the highest level of musicianship on a primary instrument and to promote both scholarship and professionalism in the field. The B.M. in Applied Music is available to those students accepted to the appropriate studio by audition on a primary instrument (woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, piano, classical guitar, harp or voice).

Coursework for this major includes rigorous core sequences of music theory, aural skills, history, piano and private study courses, as well as upper-level theory electives such as contrapuntal writing, keyboard harmony, jazz theory and topic seminars. Additionally, applied music students learn music repertoire through advanced music literature courses and ensemble participation. Performance opportunities are available through large ensembles, fully-staged opera productions, chamber music programs, annual competitions, summer festivals and recitals.

Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? Through political science you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in fields like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

All majors are required to complete three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you may choose to major in political science without a concentration or to specialize in one of three concentrations: American politics, global politics or public law. Political science is a flexible major that can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepare you to engage an increasingly complex world.

By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

With a UD accounting degree, you will have the skills you need to tell the financial stories of businesses by recording, analyzing and communicating financial information.

You’ll gain the expertise you need to interpret this data and help businesses make important investment decisions. And you’ll play a critical role in the financial arena, determining how investments are performing over time and considering how and when businesses should expand.

Learning Chinese will allow students to experience a culture with a history of 5000 years and learn a language spoken by 1.36 billion people.  China has been playing an increasingly important and influential role globally. The ability to use Chinese and to employ knowledge about Chinese culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become import/export broker, assisting with marketing activities, other serves as policy analyst, researching and analyzing information to assist in policy planning. Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; some are employed in government, international travel, or financial services; others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors.

Language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans engage in, yet it is used effortlessly and subconsciously and is acquired by infants with no formal instruction. How can you effortlessly speak and understand without even being aware of what you are doing? As a student of linguistics, you will explore the answers to this question and many others.
