Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow by 11 percent between 2016 and 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our civil engineering program prepares students with foundations in math, science, and engineering through required courses. Then, students take technical electives in the focus areas of structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, railroad, or ocean and coastal engineering. Minors in civil engineering, environmental engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental sustainability are also offered.

Our faculty are active researchers, ensuring that the content of the undergraduate program is constantly renewed and maintained at a challenging technical level and integrates discovery learning. Opportunities abound for undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit. Research in the department covers a broad range of topics with particular strengths in bridge design, construction, evaluation and rehabilitation; applications of composite materials to concrete, steel, and earth structures; field studies and numerical and physical modeling of wave/shoreline interactions; intelligent transportation systems; management and operation of civil infrastructure systems; natural disaster risk modeling and sustainability.

Chemical engineering deals with the physical, chemical and biological transformations of matter — engineering on the molecular scale. With its emphasis on problem-solving skills, quantitative analysis and teamwork, a chemical engineering education provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of fulfilling future careers. Graduates of our program are in strong demand and hired by a broad array of employers, including companies in the energy, biotechnology, semiconductor, management, consulting, and pharmaceutical industries, in addition to a variety of small start-up companies and the chemical process industry. As a management information systems (MIS) major, you will learn to use information technology to solve business problems and find creative competitive advantages. You will learn to leverage information technology to spot business trends, help companies achieve success and add value to business processes. You will learn to analyze needs, design user interfaces and develop custom database systems to help businesses run faster and smoother.

Peer Mentors

• The peer mentors are accounting and MIS students that serve as liaisons between the department and the students. Peer mentors give guidance to students on topics ranging from major/minor selection and campus organizations to the job search process. You can contact them with a quick question or to develop a long-term mentor/mentee relationship – they are here to make sure you get everything you can out of your college experience.

As a meteorology and climate science major, you will learn how to answer questions about weather and climate that are increasingly relevant and important to all of us. Will a hurricane change course and make landfall over a coastal city? How much snow will the Northeast get this winter? What do sea surface temperatures tell us about climate change?  

You will receive training in meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, that will help you understand and address events is felt throughout various sectors of society—droughts resulting in water shortages, crop damage and increased wildfire potential, or water surpluses causing flooding. You will also study the climate, which is usually considered to be an average of weather conditions over a long period of time, along with understanding the variability of climate and its extreme events. Your studies in this area will include land-ocean-atmosphere interactions, as well as the role of the sun and astronomical forces. The skills you develop in weather and climate prediction are important skills used in the agricultural, tourism, disaster management, resource management, communication and renewable energy industries.

Our graduates choose a variety of career paths in teaching, entertainment and media, government, travel, financial services or international business. Some students enter careers with international or non-governmental organizations such as the International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

Organizational and Community Leadership majors accept the challenge of leadership in an increasingly complex, global and fast-paced world. With strong backgrounds in communication, business, creativity, policy, decision-making, innovation, strategic planning and project management, our graduates are prepared to lead change that improves the lives of individuals and provides vision for the future growth and well-being of public, private, government and community organizations.

The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation and multimedia creative activities. Many students in this major continue on to graduate studies in composition at well-known institutions with the goal of working in higher education or to compose vocationally.

The Composition Studio is a vibrant and highly active group within the University of Delaware’s School of Music. Composition students remain active as performers and are able to participate in all of the school’s ensembles and productions. Diversity in compositional style and philosophy is encouraged, as is interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation. Close association with the theory and musicology areas, in addition to the performance area, provides for a well-rounded academic education where music composition students can enhance and support their creative work with specialized research and performance.

French language courses will help you acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively in Francophone settings. Courses in politics, business, literature and civilization will provide you with a thorough understanding of French and Francophone political and cultural environments.
