The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.

Latin American and Iberian Studies focuses on the history, geography, politics, literature, arts and cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Our courses cover a wide range of topics including indigenous cultures, colonialism, nationalism, liberalism and globalization as well as problems of gender, race and economic inequality. Latin American and Iberian Studies prepares students with the practical and theoretical tools they need to study and work in the globalized arena of the 21st century. Students majoring or minoring in Latin American and Iberian Studies are required to acquire competency in either Spanish or Portuguese, going beyond the minimum requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. In political science education you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers and how to teach political science content at the secondary level. You will learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning while working toward teaching certification. All majors are required to complete 30 credits of political science coursework including three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you will take upper-level courses across the political science catalog, related coursework in economics, history, geography and psychology and professional courses in education. You will also have a student teaching experience.

The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music provides students an opportunity to synthesize intensive study of music with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. The program includes training in music theory, music history/literature, performance ensembles and applied music. Rigorous coursework in music is balanced by significant opportunities for training, research and development in other academic areas. Sustainable Food Systems will train you to approach key food system challenges critically and innovatively — from agriculture and production, processing, retail consumption and waste. Sustainable food businesses, nonprofits and policymakers need more thinkers, strategists, planners and activists to help lead the population in utilizing, yet preserving our precious natural resources.

Conserving the world’s wildlife and protecting the planet are truly grand challenges and the motivation behind all that you will do with this major. Scientists estimate that 200 to 2,000 species will become extinct each year. Choose to do more by being at the forefront of species conservation. Become part of the team that is working to understand the ecology and conservation of species worldwide and join in the great debate of why every species is important to the survival of our planet. Are you curious about how wild things work and the role they play in our world? If so, you have found your home. From insects to birds, reptiles to mammals, algae to oaks, this major examines all non-domesticated living things and the challenges they face sharing the planet with mankind.

Biotechnology uses knowledge obtained about organisms at the molecular level to inform diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, create new treatments using stem- and gene-therapies, produce novel biopharmaceuticals and help address global problems such as world hunger through genetically modified plants. The Program in Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BAMBB) will prepare students to work in a wide variety of biotechnology-related settings. With a locked-step curriculum, the program will emphasize hands-on training and practical experience, while providing a solid foundation in the basic subjects from which biotechnology evolved. Faculty from academia and industry will give students a broad perspective of biotechnology’s applications and possibilities. Integrated into the curriculum are required practical internships, where students will gain additional experience in real world laboratory settings.

From its inception just a half century ago, computing has become the defining technology of our age. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world’s economic growth. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, making computer science a vibrant discipline.

UD’s computer science curriculum emphasizes software development and computer theory with the goal that students learn how computers are used to solve real-life problems. Students develop excellent programming skills as they build a solid foundation in the theory and practice of computer science and software engineering. The research of the faculty guides upper-level course offerings, and there are ample opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects. Students are encouraged to explore how other subject areas impact and are impacted by computer science through a concentration in a related discipline.
