Conserving insects, the foundation of the world’s biodiversity, is the first step towards protecting the planet. Insects are becoming extinct faster than any other group of species. From their role as major pest species threatening global food security to their use as a nutritious protein source that could help feed the world, the integrity and maintenance of insect diversity is one of the grand challenges facing coming generations. Join our Insect Ecology and Conservation major and experience a hands-on education that will empower you to make a difference in the stewardship of our planet.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.

The Nutrition and Dietetics majors is for individuals who enjoy science and who believe that proper nutrition is a key aspect of health and well-being. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are qualified healthcare professionals trained to deliver evidence-based nutrition information and medical nutrition therapy to patients and to the public. The Nutrition and Dietetics major at the University of Delaware is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completion of a post-undergraduate accredited dietetic internship is the next step toward becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

The B.A. in Art—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—provides the same foundation in art making through its Core studio courses that B.F.A. students receive along with additional upper level studio courses to further hone the student’s artistic skills. It encourages an interdisciplinary approach with many students earning a minor or second major from departments across the college and university. The B.A. provides an opportunity for students to develop highly personal portfolios that can incorporate art and design with work from other disciplines with very marketable results. The B.A. also reflects developments in Fine Art involving more environmentally and socially engaged art practices, technology or performance-based work, as well as artworks emphasizing academic research.

For almost a century, the University of Delaware’s Physics and Astronomy program has provided a world class undergraduate physics education that meets the goals of STEM education. Our department offers engaging courses in French and Francophone literature, culture, civilization, theater, business and cinema. Plus, study abroad for the opportunity to take courses in politics, art, economics, fashion, photography, tourism and gastronomy. Your study will prepare you to compete and succeed in a wide variety of professions while using the language of over 200 million people on five continents.

Studying environmental science at UD, you will learn how natural processes shape the natural environment and how humans impact nature. If you are passionate about the outdoors, the environmental science major can help you find solutions to environmental issues like habitat loss, sustainable development, water quality, biodiversity, climate change, renewable energy, and more. Environmental science takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying the atmosphere, ocean, earth, and ecosystems, which you then develop into a specialty through studying one of the concentrations listed below. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, environmental science jobs are predicted to grow 8% faster than the overall job market average between 2019 and 2029.

Our graduates choose a variety of career paths in teaching, entertainment and media, government, travel, financial services or international business. Some students enter careers with international or non-governmental organizations such as the International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

Spanish is the second-most popular language in the world, spoken by more than 400 million people. A major in Spanish Studies enables students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and helps foster understanding between cultures in our global society.

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities, and multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: some become teachers, translators or interpreters; others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services or other areas of international business. Coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors, Spanish majors have opportunities in international marketing, advertising and other communications industries. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.
