Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

The Nutrition and Dietetics majors is for individuals who enjoy science and who believe that proper nutrition is a key aspect of health and well-being. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are qualified healthcare professionals trained to deliver evidence-based nutrition information and medical nutrition therapy to patients and to the public. The Nutrition and Dietetics major at the University of Delaware is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completion of a post-undergraduate accredited dietetic internship is the next step toward becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

If you have a curiosity about how nature and people together shape the environment and what makes one place different from another, majoring in geography will let you examine the physical and social processes that help explain why features on the earth’s surface are located where they are and how people interact with their environment. You will examine the physical properties of the natural environment (water, climate, landforms and vegetation) and the role that human beliefs, activities and decision-making have in shaping the world around us. As you progress, you will select a concentration in a core area of geography—listed below as Areas of Study—to deepen your understanding of important environmental and social issues like climate change, vegetation, environmental degradation, agricultural systems, geopolitical decision-making, human migration and settlement. You will gain marketable skills (such as geographical information systems (GIS), fieldwork, interviewing or computer modeling) through coursework in research design, data collection and data analysis. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the use of geographic information technologies and data to answer environmental and societal questions is driving the job market for geographers at a rate that is almost twice that of all other occupations.

The biological sciences curriculum helps students develop an understanding of principles governing biological processes that span a continuum from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems. In addition to conveying fundamental scientific knowledge, our curriculum aims to provide opportunities for students to understand and use the process of scientific inquiry,  to promote development of students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills and to help students gain the background essential for making informed decisions about issues that relate to science, technology and the environment.

The B.A. in Biological Sciences provides excellent preparation for advanced study in graduate school or professional programs. The B.S. in Biological Sciences, as well as the B.S. in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Cellular & Molecular Biology & Genetics, offer the opportunity for highly motivated students to pursue the curriculum in greater depth. The B.S. degree in Biological Sciences, with a concentration in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is a joint program with Thomas Jefferson University College of Pharmacy.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids and gases; and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis, and experimentation, breaking natural substances down into their components, replicating in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and creating substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

By majoring in environmental studies, you will be able to gain the skills and the broad perspective that will help you balance the needs of people with the conservation of precious resources. You will first develop a strong background in both the scientific and social aspects of our relationship with the environment. Then you will deepen your knowledge in one of three concentrations, listed below as Areas of Study. Among other options, the environmental advocacy concentration can prepare you to go on to law school, and the environmental planning and design concentration can lead to work in many practical fields. The U.S. Department of Labor projects that the employment environmental scientists and specialists will grow 8% from 2019-2029, faster than the average for all occupations. Your training in both science and policy will prepare you for companies, governments and nonprofit organizations developing strategies, policies and approaches to solve environmental issues and reduce environmental impact.

As a meteorology and climate science major, you will learn how to answer questions about weather and climate that are increasingly relevant and important to all of us. Will a hurricane change course and make landfall over a coastal city? How much snow will the Northeast get this winter? What do sea surface temperatures tell us about climate change?  

You will receive training in meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, that will help you understand and address events is felt throughout various sectors of society—droughts resulting in water shortages, crop damage and increased wildfire potential, or water surpluses causing flooding. You will also study the climate, which is usually considered to be an average of weather conditions over a long period of time, along with understanding the variability of climate and its extreme events. Your studies in this area will include land-ocean-atmosphere interactions, as well as the role of the sun and astronomical forces. The skills you develop in weather and climate prediction are important skills used in the agricultural, tourism, disaster management, resource management, communication and renewable energy industries.

The secondary social studies education program comprises of seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. With the increase in data available to businesses, organizations and consumers, the need to make sense of that data has exploded. As a result, statistics is one of the fastest growing majors on college campuses. We use the expression, “few are called and less are chosen.” Statistician has become the No. 2 in Best Business Job according to U.S. News & World Report! Statistics requires excellent math skills, a sense of data structure and manipulation, and good problem solving skills.  The combination of these areas enables statisticians to assist in research and discovery in almost every discipline. To researchers, statistics is a set of tools to help estimate effects and test hypotheses.  To statisticians, the field is an exciting combination of theory, methods, and discovery used to guide research and bring products to market faster.
