Combine your love of French and your interest in government and political systems in this exciting major offered jointly by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Department of Political Science and International Relations. French language courses will help you acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively in Francophone settings. Courses in politics, business, literature and civilization will provide you with a thorough understanding of French and Francophone political and cultural environments.

The biological sciences curriculum helps students develop an understanding of principles governing biological processes that span a continuum from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems. The biology education major develops students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are essential for making informed decisions about issues that relate to science, technology, the environment and teaching biology.?

Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? Through political science you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in fields like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

All majors are required to complete three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you may choose to major in political science without a concentration or to specialize in one of three concentrations: American politics, global politics or public law. Political science is a flexible major that can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepare you to engage an increasingly complex world.

The Fine Arts Program at UD—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—combines the best of creative research and hands-on experimentation.  Students have the opportunity to experience printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, video, photography, animation and drawing. After completing core courses, students have the freedom to choose their own pathway of study that enables them to develop into an active creative force; essentially our students are empowered to impact culture in a meaningful way and positively change the world.

Central to this student-centered approach is our one-on-one advising—all fine art majors and minors work in direct contact with our professionally active faculty through studio and lecture courses. Additionally, students engage with diverse communities through dynamic visiting artist talks, highly regarded study abroad courses, productive internships and frequent field trips to major art centers. Individual or shared studios are available for advanced students.

By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

Become an effective economics teacher by strengthening your knowledge of both education and economics. Study how markets work. Learn what is produced, how it is produced, and how income is distributed. Explore subjects such as:

• The role and impact of international trade
• The effect of monopolies on the economy
• The problems of unemployment and inflation

Your studies will provide you with a framework for evaluating policy to determine whether they help improve the quality of people’s lives. You will be equipped to help design solutions for society’s economic problems.

You will also learn how to turn your knowledge into effective, engaging lessons for secondary students that will help them develop the skills they need to graduate as economically literate and flourishing citizens.

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services, or other areas of international business. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross and the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching.

Conserving the world’s wildlife and protecting the planet are truly grand challenges and the motivation behind all that you will do with this major. Scientists estimate that 200 to 2,000 species will become extinct each year. Choose to do more by being at the forefront of species conservation. From insects to birds, reptiles to mammals, algae to oaks, this major examines all non-domesticated living things and the challenges they face sharing the planet with mankind.

Environmental engineering applies scientific principles and engineering tools to improve the natural environment, address pollution problems, and ensure environmental sustainability. Environmental engineers provide safe drinking water, treat and dispose of hazardous wastes, clean up contaminated soil and groundwater, and maintain the quality of air, water, and land resources.

Air pollution: Environmental engineers design chemical and mechanical means of preventing pollutants from being discharged into the atmosphere.

Hazardous waste: From chemical neutralization to genetically engineered “waste-eating” bacteria, environmental engineers devise better ways to clean up hazardous wastes.

Industrial hygiene: Engineers specializing in industrial hygiene help design efficient industrial and manufacturing processes that minimize waste and hazardous by-products.

Water resources: Measuring and modeling stream flow, designing systems to collect and treat stormwater, and predicting the impact of increased rainfall intensity on water conveyance systems are activities that ensure the quality of municipal water supplies and natural water systems.

Solid waste management: Environmental engineers lead the way in solid waste management, from designing landfills that won’t contaminate soil or groundwater, to reducing the amount of trash through better recycling processes, to understanding how various materials biodegrade.

Wastewater: Treating sewage and other wastewater is vitally important, not only for aquatic habitats but for human health as well. Engineers design facilities and processes to minimize the environmental impact of wastewater treatment.

Communication offers a strong theory- and research-based program coupled with skills training in oral communication, video production, broadcast journalism and public relations. Students also study intercultural communication, principles in advertising, media and children, politics and entertainment, advertising, persuasion, strategic communication, social media management, relationship skills and conflict management. This well-rounded curriculum prepares our graduates for a successful and dynamic career.
