Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

Physicists investigate the fundamental properties of our physical world and develop a quantitative understanding of its phenomena with the scale of the investigations ranging from the sub-atomic to the transgalactic. Physics and astronomy have had a profound impact on how we perceive the universe and our position in it. The Secondary Science Education major at the University of Delaware offers students interested in teaching middle or high school science the opportunity to study their scientific area of interest—like physics—while also learning about and practicing the best teaching methods.

The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation and multimedia creative activities. Many students in this major continue on to graduate studies in composition at well-known institutions with the goal of working in higher education or to compose vocationally.

The Composition Studio is a vibrant and highly active group within the University of Delaware’s School of Music. Composition students remain active as performers and are able to participate in all of the school’s ensembles and productions. Diversity in compositional style and philosophy is encouraged, as is interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation. Close association with the theory and musicology areas, in addition to the performance area, provides for a well-rounded academic education where music composition students can enhance and support their creative work with specialized research and performance.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Our goal is to inspire our future educators to teach passionately and knowledgeably so that all students are included in the mosaic of the past, present and future. Landscape Architecture is perfect for any student interested in learning ways to address solutions to environmental, natural resource and sustainability challenges at local, regional and global levels. Landscape architects work in cities and communities to help keep air and water clean, provide habitat for wildlife and build safe, beautiful places for people to enjoy. They work in interdisciplinary firms with other professionals to design outside spaces where people live, work and play. So many of your favorite parks, plazas, golf courses and certainly college campuses resulted directly from the hands-on technical expertise and aesthetic sensibility of landscape architects. If you have been to Central Park in New York City or the Baltimore Inner Harbor, you have visited places designed, planned and managed by landscape architects.

Construction engineers lead the most dynamic phase of civil and environmental engineering projects, from procurement to construction of the physical facility. There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in this field.

Technologies such as building information modeling, virtual reality, and visualization are revolutionizing the industry by providing construction engineers with unprecedented insight into the building process. Facilities can be virtually constructed before ground is broken to help identify potential problems, refine construction techniques, ensure safe and productive job sites, and facilitate success. New processes employing techniques from integrated manufacturing reduce waste and facilitate sequencing of activities through integrated project delivery, while new materials and methods promise to change the way business is done in the future.

We provide our students with the engineering foundation essential for professional licensure, valuable experience through co-op requirements, and formalized training in business essentials through an integrated business certificate program. Together, these elements prepare our students for leadership and success in the construction industry.

Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? In political science education you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers and how to teach political science content at the secondary level. You will learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning while working toward teaching certification. All majors are required to complete 30 credits of political science coursework including three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you will take upper-level courses across the political science catalog, related coursework in economics, history, geography and psychology and professional courses in education. You will also have a student teaching experience.

Be part of solving one of humanity’s most critical grand challenges — the global demand for food and fiber.  With the population expected to grow by 2.3 billion by 2050, feeding the world will require raising overall food production by 70 percent.  You will become knowledgeable in animal nutrition, health, behavior, reproduction, physiology, genetics and animal management. You will play an important role in education and the conservation of non-domesticated animals housed in zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. You will also contribute to a greater understanding of the complex relationships between domestic animals (livestock and pets), wild animals, humans and our shared environment.

Africana Studies is a multidisciplinary program with its basic content in the social sciences and humanities. The B.A. prepares a student to develop a complex and critical assessment of the social, political, intellectual and artistic dimensions of the African American and African Diasporic experience through comparative analyses of articles, books, film, art and archival material, to effectively communicate that knowledge orally and in written work and to apply their skills in projects that provide service to black communities in the region. This knowledge and these skills may be effectively incorporated into virtually any career path the student chooses.

The Global Studies major enables students to succeed in an increasingly globalized society by exposing them to the political and cultural foundations of global issues. Our majors develop an analytical approach to critical issues that appear across national boundaries and cultural regions — examining them from a variety of disciplines. This integrated interdisciplinary program of study prepares majors for a broad range of career paths including government and international business or in international health, humanitarian, environmental, development and other types of non-governmental agencies.
