Think linguists just speak lots of languages? Think again. Linguists are scientists who study language. Language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans engage in, yet it is used effortlessly and subconsciously and is acquired by infants with no formal instruction. How can you effortlessly speak and understand without even being aware of what you are doing? As a student of linguistics, you will explore the answers to this question and many others.

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Applied Music is for students intent on a career as a professional musician or music professor within higher education. The applied music degree track is designed to develop the highest level of musicianship on a primary instrument and to promote both scholarship and professionalism in the field. The B.M. in Applied Music is available to those students accepted to the appropriate studio by audition on a primary instrument (woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, piano, classical guitar, harp or voice).

Coursework for this major includes rigorous core sequences of music theory, aural skills, history, piano and private study courses, as well as upper-level theory electives such as contrapuntal writing, keyboard harmony, jazz theory and topic seminars. Additionally, applied music students learn music repertoire through advanced music literature courses and ensemble participation. Performance opportunities are available through large ensembles, fully-staged opera productions, chamber music programs, annual competitions, summer festivals and recitals.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Plato coined the word 'philosopher' to refer to a 'lover of wisdom'. As a discipline, philosophy seeks to understand the world and our relation to it by examining and scrutinizing the foundational assumptions that lie behind our everyday thinking. Philosophy asks big questions: What fundamentally exists? Are there any moral truths? Is free will possible? Can machines think? What is a scientific law? Which forms of government are best? Is there a God? But perhaps more than any specific set of questions or ideas, philosophy is about the love of critical and creative thinking, intelligent discussion and cogent argument. Since these skills are vital in every field, philosophical tools and training can be useful for students of virtually any subject. Students with a special interest in legal careers have the option of selecting the department’s philosophy and law concentration. Philosophy majors tend to score highest on the GRE, MCAT and LSAT exams, and many have gone on to successful careers in a variety of fields.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

The UD Visual Communications Program—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—has an outstanding reputation. The VC degree builds on our two-year Core curriculum through a series of courses intended to inspire inquiry in the art of communication design and to impart applicable skills in various design methodologies.

Our program engages students in an educational experience where they learn by doing. In our small classes students have intense studio experiences, exploring their creativity, developing skills, and designing across all media. Through internships, study abroad programs, field trips and visiting artists and designers, our graduates leave school already plugged-in to their career path.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

And if you want to spark that excitement in others, studying earth science education is the way to start. Earth science educators are critically important to teach young people to respect and conserve the planet’s resources and to maintain and preserve a healthy, livable environment.

In the earth science education program, you will be prepared for a future as a high school science teacher. The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and emphasizes giving you a strong background in both liberal arts and content. You will complete all your field experiences and student teaching at one of Delaware’s fastest growing school districts during your sophomore, junior, and senior years, culminating with a 15-week student teaching practicum. On completing the program requirements, you will receive the University of Delaware's endorsement for teaching certification.

The biological sciences curriculum helps students develop an understanding of principles governing biological processes that span a continuum from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems. In addition to conveying fundamental scientific knowledge, our curriculum aims to provide opportunities for students to understand and use the process of scientific inquiry,  to promote development of students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills and to help students gain the background essential for making informed decisions about issues that relate to science, technology and the environment.

The B.A. in Biological Sciences provides excellent preparation for advanced study in graduate school or professional programs. The B.S. in Biological Sciences, as well as the B.S. in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Cellular & Molecular Biology & Genetics, offer the opportunity for highly motivated students to pursue the curriculum in greater depth. The B.S. degree in Biological Sciences, with a concentration in Pharmaceutical Sciences, is a joint program with Thomas Jefferson University College of Pharmacy.
