The biological sciences curriculum helps students develop an understanding of principles governing biological processes that span a continuum from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems. The biology education major develops students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are essential for making informed decisions about issues that relate to science, technology, the environment and teaching biology.?

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

UD’s Early Childhood Education major prepares students to help young children--with and without special need--to reach their full potential. Graduates can teach in public and private schools and child care programs, become early interventionists and advocates, or work for community service agencies.

Our coursework focuses on child development--teaching students how to identify appropriate instructional strategies and materials that meet each child’s social, cognitive, and physical characteristics. Early childhood education students gain real-world experience, on our children’s campus and in community agencies and schools, working with young children from diverse backgrounds and with special needs.

Experience hands-on training in Japanese calligraphy or learn what makes Japanese video games a dominant force in the global market. Our language classes cover all social situations from informal to formal occasions with solid training in honorifics and skills for both academic and business presentations. Our Japanese studies program allows you to specialize in film, literature or pop culture while advancing your language skills and learning more about current events. A dedicated and expert faculty offer dynamic courses in language, literature, culture and civilization, film, history, politics and current events as well as classes in translation. On campus and through study abroad, master the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing – while immersing yourself in the culture of Italy. Prepare for graduate study or for a career in international business, journalism, translation, editing, marketing, travel, teaching or many other fields.

Participate in our study abroad programs which include winter session in the medieval city of Siena, summer in sunny Sorrento, or a semester program in the capital city of Rome. On campus, join the Circolo Italiano club to meet other Italian language students, brush up on your language skills and partake in numerous cultural activities. Outstanding students in the Italian program are awarded each year with induction into Gamma Kappa Alpha, the national Italian honors society.

Our joint program with the College of Education ensures that our majors will be prepared to successfully meet the needs of a diverse, modern student population.

Anthropologists study us. We learn how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. Anthropologists study people and primates face-to-face and we study past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. We examine the origins of humans as cultural beings; the processes that create particular cultures; and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others. In our globalized world, we ask how the local influences and shapes the regional, national and global, and in turn, how the global affects the local. Every career today requires understanding of other cultures, and how they influence our complicated, rapidly changing, interconnected human experience. There’s no limit to where you can go with that kind of understanding of our world and its peoples.

Landscape Architecture is perfect for any student interested in learning ways to address solutions to environmental, natural resource and sustainability challenges at local, regional and global levels. Landscape architects work in cities and communities to help keep air and water clean, provide habitat for wildlife and build safe, beautiful places for people to enjoy. They work in interdisciplinary firms with other professionals to design outside spaces where people live, work and play. So many of your favorite parks, plazas, golf courses and certainly college campuses resulted directly from the hands-on technical expertise and aesthetic sensibility of landscape architects. If you have been to Central Park in New York City or the Baltimore Inner Harbor, you have visited places designed, planned and managed by landscape architects.

Studying the growth of emerging markets, consumer behavior, production schedules or portfolio optimization are important jobs in a free market economy. The ability to model loan defaults, price insurance products for life, health or property, or model uncertainty and risk in other economic activities, is a highly prized skill. The Mathematics and Economics program trains students to model uncertainty, with a focus on the financial services sector and the economy. The degree is also excellent preparation for students planning to pursue a graduate degree in Economics, as a strong background in mathematics is a must for admission into the top graduate programs.

A Language of Science, Culture and Business

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: some become teachers, translators or interpreters while others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services or other areas of international business. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising and other communication industries provide further outlets for language skills that our students couple with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross and the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.
