Chemical engineering deals with the physical, chemical and biological transformations of matter — engineering on the molecular scale. Environmental and Resource Economics applies economic principles to the many and varied environmental and natural resource challenges facing our society today and in the future. In this major, you will study how human decisions impact our environment and natural resources, including issues involving land use, water supply, water quality, air quality, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Do you have an interest in environmental and resource management, economic analysis, or weighing the costs and benefits of alternative environmental policies? We will provide you with a solid foundation in resource economics, business and the environment, topped with a range of data and analytical specialties.

The Blue Hen Investment Club is the University of Delaware’s student-managed investment fund with $1.8 million assets under management. It is open to students of all majors who are willing to commit to managing a portion of the university’s endowment.

Our joint program with the College of Education ensures that our majors will be prepared to successfully meet the needs of a diverse, modern student population.

Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow by 11 percent between 2016 and 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our civil engineering program prepares students with foundations in math, science, and engineering through required courses. Then, students take technical electives in the focus areas of structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, railroad, or ocean and coastal engineering. Minors in civil engineering, environmental engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental sustainability are also offered.

Our faculty are active researchers, ensuring that the content of the undergraduate program is constantly renewed and maintained at a challenging technical level and integrates discovery learning. Opportunities abound for undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit. Research in the department covers a broad range of topics with particular strengths in bridge design, construction, evaluation and rehabilitation; applications of composite materials to concrete, steel, and earth structures; field studies and numerical and physical modeling of wave/shoreline interactions; intelligent transportation systems; management and operation of civil infrastructure systems; natural disaster risk modeling and sustainability.

For almost a century, the University of Delaware’s Physics and Astronomy program has provided a world class undergraduate physics education that meets the goals of STEM education. Our graduates join a variety of physical science and engineering graduate programs, enter medical school, find employment in industry and teach in high schools all over the country.

There is a critical shortage of qualified middle and high school mathematics teachers in schools in our region and across the nation. Mathematics is an important and challenging subject, and teachers well-trained in mathematics and the teaching of mathematics can make mathematics accessible to all middle and high school students with different needs and abilities. This can be a very fulfilling, emotionally satisfying and financially secure career for motivated students. Both the B.A. and B.S. degree programs in mathematics education lead to teacher certification; the B.S. degree may be more suitable for students who have taken or plan to take many credits in math and science, while the B.A. degree is ideal for students who are interested in achieving breadth in the liberal arts.

Medical diagnostics is a clinical-oriented science program that incorporates the basic science courses required for admission to medical school with medical-related courses that impact on the diagnosis and therapy of disease. This major prepares students who plan to pursue postgraduate study in health-related areas immediately upon graduation, including careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, and physician assistant.

Students with the goal of attending Medical School should visit UD's Pre-Med website for advising and admission information. There are two distinct pathways by which students can gain admission to a professional school. One is open to all majors and requires a basic knowledge of science and mathematics. Students taking this option are evaluated by the Health Science Advisement and Evaluation Committee (HSAEC), which writes a University of Delaware recommendation to medical institutions of the student's choice.

Freshmen enter as medical laboratory and diagnostics interest majors. In order to enter the medical diagnostics major at the end of the sophomore year certain criteria are required: a minimum 3.00 GPA for the first four semesters, including successful completion of prerequisite courses in chemistry, biological sciences, physics and/or anatomy and physiology, and completion of at least 60 credit hours, including the prerequisite courses. Admission to the junior/senior major is determined by academic achievement.

The University of Delaware's Bachelor of Arts in Game Studies and eSports prepares majors for excellence in a broad range of careers in the video game industry and related fields. Today's video game developers and publishers aren't just looking for qualified programmers and designers, they need well-balanced experts in cultural awareness, marketing, management, education, communication, law and health. Meanwhile, the surging popularity of eSports, live streaming and indie game development shows how global game culture continues to grow and diversify in the 21st century.

UD's Game Studies and eSports degree provides graduates with a rigorous interdisciplinary background, unlocking the myriad skills that will allow them to conquer the challenges the video game industry faces every day.

Biotechnology uses knowledge obtained about organisms at the molecular level to inform diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, create new treatments using stem- and gene-therapies, produce novel biopharmaceuticals and help address global problems such as world hunger through genetically modified plants. The Program in Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BAMBB) will prepare students to work in a wide variety of biotechnology-related settings. With a locked-step curriculum, the program will emphasize hands-on training and practical experience, while providing a solid foundation in the basic subjects from which biotechnology evolved. Faculty from academia and industry will give students a broad perspective of biotechnology’s applications and possibilities. Integrated into the curriculum are required practical internships, where students will gain additional experience in real world laboratory settings.
