From its inception just a half century ago, computing has become the defining technology of our age. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, making computer science a vibrant discipline.

UD’s computer science curriculum emphasizes software development and computer theory with the goal that students learn how computers are used to solve real-life problems. Students develop excellent programming skills as they build a solid foundation in the theory and practice of computer science and software engineering. The research of the faculty guides upper-level course offerings, and there are ample opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects. Students are encouraged to explore how other subject areas impact and are impacted by computer science through a concentration in a related discipline.

Program Highlights

Hands-on Learning

• As a Lerner College financial planning and wealth management major, you will complete specialized courses in investments, insurance, income tax, retirement planning and estate planning. During your final semester of senior year you will complete the capstone course. The capstone course is a “real world” experience. You will work on 4 client cases throughout the semester, working closely with members of the Financial Planning Advisory Board to build financial plans for each. The board is a committee of 9 UD alumni who have built their own successful financial planning practices. This means you’ll get hands-on training that takes you through the full financial planning process from start to finish – before you even graduate.

Certified Financial Planning Accreditation

• The Certified Financial Planning (CFP) Board has accredited the Lerner College’s financial planning and wealth management program. Individuals who wish to take the CFP Exam must first complete a series of educational requirements. Graduates of the financial planning and wealth management major at UD will have satisfied the CFP education requirement. This means that our graduates can sit for the CFP Exam immediately after graduation.

Seminar Series

• You will have opportunities throughout the year to hear from finance industry professionals from public and private institutions such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve Bank and the nation’s top bank and trust companies like JPMorgan Chase, PNC and Wells Fargo.

• As a financial planning and wealth management student, you’ll have access to industry-specific research databases maintained by the Department of Finance. The most commonly used databases are Bloomberg, eMoney and Morningstar.

Students pursuing the B.S. in Mathematics acquire depth in several key areas of mathematics, suitable as preparation for graduate study as well as immediate technically-oriented careers in business and government. Students interested in acquiring breadth in the liberal arts and less depth in mathematics can pursue the B.A. in Mathematics. Training in mathematics develops analytical and problem-solving skills that can be widely applied, and students with a degree in Mathematics frequently find rewarding careers that do not use the word “mathematician” in the job title.

For almost a century, the University of Delaware’s Physics and Astronomy program has provided a world class undergraduate physics education that meets the goals of STEM education. Our graduates join a variety of physical science and engineering graduate programs, enter medical school, find employment in industry and teach in high schools all over the country.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

CFA Institute Recognition

• The undergraduate finance degree at the University of Delaware has been recognized by the CFA Institute as a program that incorporates over 75% of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Exam Material into its curriculum, including the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. The Blue Hen Investment Club is the University of Delaware’s student-managed investment fund with $1.8 million assets under management. It is open to students of all majors who are willing to commit to managing a portion of the university’s endowment.

Over the years, the fund has created leaders who have found careers with institutions such as Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, UBS, PwC, EY, KPMG and McKinsey & Company.

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science is designed for students who wish to combine advanced study of the Spanish language with a comprehensive background in Political Science and International Relations. The Spanish coursework included in the Spanish and History major will enable students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and foster understanding between cultures in our global society. The required coursework in Political Science exposes students to the theories, institutions and processes of political systems and their functions within complex societies. The combination of these two areas allows students to enhance their skills and gain a more worldly perspective by studying both the language and political relations of the Spanish-speaking world.

Majors and minors study how different local, national and regional cultures interact within Asia and beyond. The program draws on the strengths of specialists in anthropology, art history, English, Chinese and Japanese language, foreign literature, history, music, philosophy, politics and international relations, sociology and criminal justice. Students may major or minor in the program, with an Honors option also available. Asian Studies complements a host of other majors, including Chinese and Japanese language, history, international relations, political science and international business. The program encourages students to further deepen cultural and linguistic engagement through study abroad.

The University of Delaware's Bachelor of Arts in Game Studies and eSports prepares majors for excellence in a broad range of careers in the video game industry and related fields. Today's video game developers and publishers aren't just looking for qualified programmers and designers, they need well-balanced experts in cultural awareness, marketing, management, education, communication, law and health. Meanwhile, the surging popularity of eSports, live streaming and indie game development shows how global game culture continues to grow and diversify in the 21st century.

UD's Game Studies and eSports degree provides graduates with a rigorous interdisciplinary background, unlocking the myriad skills that will allow them to conquer the challenges the video game industry faces every day.

The Bachelor of Music in Music History and Literature provides a rigorous core of courses in the history and literature of Western music and offers opportunities for deeper study in related fields such as music theory, literature, anthropology, philosophy, history and foreign languages. The degree culminates with an extended senior thesis under the mentorship of a member of the music history faculty. This degree is aimed primarily at students preparing to attend graduate school in musicology, although it might be of interest to students who are planning a career in a non-teaching, non-performing area of music such as ensemble management and representation, information sciences or educational media.

Opportunities are available for supported summer research and independent study. Also available to our students is the opportunity for exploration of the school’s extensive collection of period instruments in our Early Music Ensembles, which gives students a chance to perform music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and Baroque Eras.
