The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation and multimedia creative activities. Many students in this major continue on to graduate studies in composition at well-known institutions with the goal of working in higher education or to compose vocationally.

The Composition Studio is a vibrant and highly active group within the University of Delaware’s School of Music. Composition students remain active as performers and are able to participate in all of the school’s ensembles and productions. Diversity in compositional style and philosophy is encouraged, as is interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation. Close association with the theory and musicology areas, in addition to the performance area, provides for a well-rounded academic education where music composition students can enhance and support their creative work with specialized research and performance.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain and the behavior they produce. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge.

The secondary social studies education program comprises of seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. We produce middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Our goal is to inspire our future educators to teach passionately and knowledgeably so that all students are included in the mosaic of the past, present and future. With the increase in data available to businesses, organizations and consumers, the need to make sense of that data has exploded. As a result, statistics is one of the fastest growing majors on college campuses. We use the expression, “few are called and less are chosen.” Statistician has become the No. 2 in Best Business Job according to U.S. News & World Report! Statistics requires excellent math skills, a sense of data structure and manipulation, and good problem solving skills.  The combination of these areas enables statisticians to assist in research and discovery in almost every discipline. To researchers, statistics is a set of tools to help estimate effects and test hypotheses.  To statisticians, the field is an exciting combination of theory, methods, and discovery used to guide research and bring products to market faster.

The B.A. in European Studies blends the humanities and the social sciences. Offered jointly by the Departments of History; Political Science; and Languages, Literatures and Cultures, this interdisciplinary major combines language training with courses in history, politics and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture (France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Russia are all choices) within a broader transnational European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music or any other subject germane to a student’s chosen focus. Faculty guide students in designing a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target area and Europe as a whole. Study abroad in Europe during a winter session or semester program is also encouraged. The combined effect is a body of knowledge that can launch careers in international business, law school, government agencies, NGOs and a range of graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.

Learning Chinese will allow students to experience a culture with a history of 5000 years and learn a language spoken by 1.36 billion people.  China has been playing an increasingly important and influential role globally. The ability to use Chinese and to employ knowledge about Chinese culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become import/export broker, assisting with marketing activities, other serves as policy analyst, researching and analyzing information to assist in policy planning. Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; some are employed in government, international travel, or financial services; others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors.

As a management information systems (MIS) major, you will learn to use information technology to solve business problems and find creative competitive advantages. You will learn to leverage information technology to spot business trends, help companies achieve success and add value to business processes. You will learn to analyze needs, design user interfaces and develop custom database systems to help businesses run faster and smoother.

Combine your love of French and your interest in government and political systems in this exciting major offered jointly by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Department of Political Science and International Relations. French language courses will help you acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively in Francophone settings. Information Systems is an evolving scientific area of study that bridges the gap between business and computer science.

Networks of computers extend human brainpower by creating modes of communication and record keeping that are at once more complex and more convenient than ever before. To be effective, these systems must aid and enhance our business, government and service organizations, which requires a careful understanding of the factors controlling human interactions, as well as the technical potential and limitations of computer systems.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers students a Bachelor of Science major in Information Systems (INSY-BS), which combines business and information technology subjects. The major addresses student demand for courses oriented toward the design of new software systems for business and consumer needs. Students enrolled in the major must fulfill a set of major courses along with 1) a set of business courses (referred to as the business core) and 2) a set of information systems courses (referred to as the information systems core).

The business core emphasizes management and marketing issues. Students are prepared for careers in management and financial matters through courses in accounting, finance, operations management, organizational behavior, and marketing.

The information core stresses the use of computing technology in solving business problems.

Course work includes technological problem solving and project management, as well as a selection of advanced computer science courses designed to prepare students for careers in programming, business telecommunication networks, system development, database systems, and software engineering.

The University of Delaware School of Nursing offers several opportunities for students to become a registered nurse (RN). There are three types of undergraduate programs:

• Traditional Undergraduate Program: The traditional undergraduate program is designed for beginning students of nursing, including high school graduates and change-of-major students. This is a four-year on-campus program and students are directly admitted to the Nursing program, beginning their Nursing curriculum as freshman.
• Accelerated Degree Program: The accelerated degree program is a 17 month on-campus program designed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and wish to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
• RN to BSN: The RN to BSN program is an on-line program designed for registered nurses who want to attain a bachelor of science degree in nursing.

This sequential curricular development will allow students to build a solid foundation for nursing practice. To support the student experience, a state-of-the-art clinical simulation laboratory and resource center allow students to pursue independent and collaborative coursework.
