Environmental engineering applies scientific principles and engineering tools to improve the natural environment, address pollution problems, and ensure environmental sustainability. Environmental engineers provide safe drinking water, treat and dispose of hazardous wastes, clean up contaminated soil and groundwater, and maintain the quality of air, water, and land resources.

Air pollution: Environmental engineers design chemical and mechanical means of preventing pollutants from being discharged into the atmosphere.

Hazardous waste: From chemical neutralization to genetically engineered “waste-eating” bacteria, environmental engineers devise better ways to clean up hazardous wastes.

Industrial hygiene: Engineers specializing in industrial hygiene help design efficient industrial and manufacturing processes that minimize waste and hazardous by-products.

Water resources: Measuring and modeling stream flow, designing systems to collect and treat stormwater, and predicting the impact of increased rainfall intensity on water conveyance systems are activities that ensure the quality of municipal water supplies and natural water systems.

Solid waste management: Environmental engineers lead the way in solid waste management, from designing landfills that won’t contaminate soil or groundwater, to reducing the amount of trash through better recycling processes, to understanding how various materials biodegrade.

Wastewater: Treating sewage and other wastewater is vitally important, not only for aquatic habitats but for human health as well. Engineers design facilities and processes to minimize the environmental impact of wastewater treatment.

History majors at the University of Delaware explore the past while acquiring skills to shape the future. The major prepares graduates for successful careers in fields from consulting to government, education to the arts and from museums to management. Alums report that our program taught them to analyze complexity and prepared them to communicate their conclusions clearly and convincingly. Effective analysis of documents, objects and ideas from the past requires “historical empathy” — reading with an open mind in ways that foster deep understanding of the perspectives and motivations of others. This kind of open-mindedness prepares our students for more than career success. Students also learn to draw on the wisdom of the past to make meaningful lives for themselves as informed citizens and stewards of our evolving future.

Have you ever considered how countries navigate global politics, form partnerships or solve global problems? In international relations you will learn about global and comparative politics. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in all fields, like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

As an interdisciplinary program, all majors are required to complete five core courses: Introduction to American Politics or Introduction to Global Politics, one economics course, one history course, one geography course and an advanced language course. Beyond the core courses, you will choose one topical concentration in development and political economy, diplomacy and global order, societies and beliefs or U.S. foreign policy and national security, and one regional specialization in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America or the Middle East. International relations can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepares you to engage an increasingly complex world.

The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation and multimedia creative activities. Many students in this major continue on to graduate studies in composition at well-known institutions with the goal of working in higher education or to compose vocationally.

The Composition Studio is a vibrant and highly active group within the University of Delaware’s School of Music. Composition students remain active as performers and are able to participate in all of the school’s ensembles and productions. Diversity in compositional style and philosophy is encouraged, as is interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation. Close association with the theory and musicology areas, in addition to the performance area, provides for a well-rounded academic education where music composition students can enhance and support their creative work with specialized research and performance.

Students in the Human Relations Administration (HRA) major complete course work and field placements that will prepare them for a career in human resources at both profit and not-for-profit agencies. They will develop the skills necessary to manage employee relationships, facilitate critical workplace training, enhance staff motivation and ensure compliance of important legal issues including diversity and inclusion.

Human Resources is a growing field, and our students will possess highly marketable skills upon entering the workforce. In addition to completing a B.S. in HRA, students will earn a minor in Organizational and Community Leadership—allowing them to master several academic disciplines including business, communications, human development, mentorship/counseling and interpersonal relationships.

With 450-hours of internship experience, students will also receive on-the-job training in a human resources organization and complete a seminar focused on professional development and professional issues in the field.

Biological systems have many interacting units at the level of molecules, cells, organs and organisms. These complicated systems may be understood through the construction, analysis and computational simulation of mathematical models. Such models exploit both theory and observation to provide new predictions of the behavior of complex biological systems. The UD Quantitative Biology Program equips students with crucial mathematical tools along with the requisite scientific knowledge necessary to apply them in the life sciences.

Anthropologists study how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. They study people and primates face-to-face as well as past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. They examine the origins of humans as cultural beings, the processes that create particular cultures and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others.

The secondary social studies education program comprises seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. We produce middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.

As a student in this program, you will gain competencies in various aspects of the industry including merchandise and assortment planning, product development, consumer behavior, sourcing, distribution channels, communication and sustainability. Industry complexities offer fertile ground for impactful research, critical thinking applications within the classroom and collaborations with corporate partners. Understanding the global platform on which the apparel industry is based is central to our program content.

From the most recent advances in plant molecular biology to the latest methods for growing and maintaining healthy plants, students in the Plant Science major will incorporate these practices with their evolving knowledge of the plant kingdom.
