The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. The Bachelor of Arts in Music with Music Management Concentration provides broad coverage of music combined with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. This program provides opportunities designed to prepare students for administrative careers within the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors of the music industry. A 4+1 program option is offered through the Bachelor of Arts in Music Management, which combines the liberal arts music major with a master’s degree in Business Administration completed in the fifth year of study.?

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of the mind as an information processor. It is a relatively new discipline that arose in the mid-20th century from a convergence of conceptual revolutions primarily in psychology, computer science and linguistics. Today, it also draws from fields such as philosophy, neuroscience and anthropology. A central goal of cognitive science is to determine structures and processes that underwrite cognitive tasks such as perception, memory, attention, language and motor control. This, in turn, plays an important role in applied research areas such as artificial intelligence, educational psychology, the science of language and communication.

Latin American and Iberian Studies focuses on the history, geography, politics, literature, arts and cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Our courses cover a wide range of topics including indigenous cultures, colonialism, nationalism, liberalism and globalization as well as problems of gender, race and economic inequality. Latin American and Iberian Studies prepares students with the practical and theoretical tools they need to study and work in the globalized arena of the 21st century. Students majoring or minoring in Latin American and Iberian Studies are required to acquire competency in either Spanish or Portuguese, going beyond the minimum requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Food and fiber industries constitute approximately 16 percent of the U.S. economy with a value of over $2.5 trillion and 20 million jobs. The production of food is only a small part of this total, with most of the effort, resources and jobs involved in creating and marketing products to consumers. The Food and Agribusiness Marketing and Management major focuses on the unique aspects of these industries, including food marketing, management and leadership, and entrepreneurship. Not only will you obtain a strong background in business principles, you will graduate with the knowledge of how the agribusiness sector operates and impacts domestic and world economies. The job market is hungry for students well trained in business but who also understand the unique nature and dynamics of the food and fiber industry. Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The sociology major offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Emphasis is placed on inequalities of race, class and gender; social justice; deviance and criminology; social correlates of health and wellbeing; disasters and the environment; and law and society. The major provides students with foundational skills for informed citizenship and active participation in their communities. Sociology teaches a distinctive way of looking at society and offers unique insights into social behavior through research and other opportunities for experiential learning.

If you have a curiosity about how nature and people together shape the environment and what makes one place different from another, majoring in geography will let you examine the physical and social processes that help explain why features on the earth’s surface are located where they are and how people interact with their environment. You will examine the physical properties of the natural environment (water, climate, landforms and vegetation) and the role that human beliefs, activities and decision-making have in shaping the world around us. As you progress, you will select a concentration in a core area of geography—listed below as Areas of Study—to deepen your understanding of important environmental and social issues like climate change, vegetation, environmental degradation, agricultural systems, geopolitical decision-making, human migration and settlement. You will gain marketable skills (such as geographical information systems (GIS), fieldwork, interviewing or computer modeling) through coursework in research design, data collection and data analysis. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the use of geographic information technologies and data to answer environmental and societal questions is driving the job market for geographers at a rate that is almost twice that of all other occupations.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain and the behavior they produce. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge.

The secondary social studies education program comprises of seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Think linguists just speak lots of languages? Think again. Linguists are scientists who study language. Language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans engage in, yet it is used effortlessly and subconsciously and is acquired by infants with no formal instruction. How can you effortlessly speak and understand without even being aware of what you are doing? As a student of linguistics, you will explore the answers to this question and many others.

Medical laboratory science encompasses the essence of biology, chemistry, and medicine. It is associated with the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of disease through the understanding, application, and performance of clinical laboratory analyses. Medical laboratory scientists perform laboratory tests on blood and other body fluids to aid in the maintenance of health and the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The medical laboratory science major prepares students for national certification as medical laboratory scientists through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC).

Freshmen enter as medical laboratory and diagnostics interest majors. In order to enter the medical laboratory science major at the end of the sophomore year certain criteria are required: a minimum 2.00 GPA for the first 4 semesters, minimum 2.00 GPA for prerequisite courses in chemistry and biological sciences (science index), and completion of at least 60 credit hours, including the prerequisite courses. Admission to the junior/senior major is determined by academic achievement. Students who meet the standards are admitted to the major in descending order of grade point average until the 36 positions in the junior class are filled. In the past, all sophomores with both a 2.5 or better GPA and a 2.00 or better science index have been successful in gaining admission to the junior/senior major.
