As a forensic science major at the University of New Haven, you will learn to use science and technology to uncover evidence that can "testify" in court and impact criminal or civil cases. Human uses of the marine environment, including fishing, aquaculture, energy development, and tourism, have increased significantly in the past two decades. Coastal areas are highly productive and resource-rich ecosystems and also account for some of the most sought-after real estate in the world. Multiple uses, potentially conflicting interests, and economic and social dependency create ever more complex issues of sustainability, environmental law and policy, and resource management.

Fathom the Depths of Human-Marine Dynamics

Through the University of New Haven’s Master of Arts in Marine Policy and Management program, you will acquire a deeper understanding of the complex forces at play in marine-linked human and natural systems. The competencies that you gain in the program — developing and implementing policy and management plans, strategizing for effective public outreach and communication, and highly refined research skills — will make you a vital part of the decision making process on issues of marine natural resource management, policy, and sustainability.

Program Outcomes

1. Knowledge Base of Psychology Students will demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, ethical principles, and historical trends in psychology.

2. Research Methods in Psychology Students will understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation

3. Critical Thinking Skills in Psychology Students will use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, reflection, and, when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes.

4. Communication in Psychology Students will learn how to communicate competently and in a scholarly manner about psychological concepts in writing and orally.

The B.A. in psychology program requires the completion of 122 credits, 53-62 of which are required to complete the major.

To complete the major, students must complete 25 credits of core psychology courses, 7 credits of non-psychology required courses, and select one of the following: a 21-credit concentration in general psychology, a 27-credit concentration in clinical psychology, a 27-credit concentration in community and society, or a 30-credit concentration in forensic psychology; and complete the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

Through this interdisciplinary major, you’ll take courses in political science, economics, national security, legal studies, and history, studying conflict, development, and diplomacy. You will examine the resolutions of international conflicts, the role of inequality as a cause of conflict – and a critical component of its resolution – and explore post-conflict peace-making. You’ll do all this while learning from professors who have extensive international experience.

As an International Affairs major, you will also:

• Explore post-conflict reconstruction, foreign policy, and the international political economy
• Focus your studies on regions of rapid social change and economic development
• Study the necessity of sustainable socio-political systems
• Participate in high-impact activities such as the University’s award-winning Model United Nations team

The Concentrations That Carve Out Your Future Career Path

Our M.S. in Human Resources program offers aspiring leaders three areas of concentration:

• Talent Management. You will create plans to recruit, hire, train, retain, and motivate a diverse and global workforce.
• Organizational Leadership. You will develop advanced interaction skills in working effectively with others as well the change management skills that will make you an influential leader.
• Employee Relations. You will use and apply conflict intervention and negotiation strategies in the management and resolution of workplace disputes.

The Event and Tourism Management Concentration provides students with skills and experiences focused specifically on the event and tourism industries. Students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience relevant for managing the sustainable tourism experience for the benefit of the traveler, host, and supporting industries. Complex aspects of event, convention, and meeting management are highlighted. Students will also be exposed to the competencies essential to functioning within the industry in an international context.

Students earning a B.S. degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management with a concentration in Event and Tourism Management are required to complete 121 credits, including the University core curriculum (41 credits), Hospitality and Tourism Management major requirements (36 credits), Event and Tourism Management concentration (9 credits), Writing Across the Curriculum elective (3 credits), fieldwork (2 credits), service requirement (1 credit), internship (3 credits) and free electives (26 credits).

The International Business - Sport Management degree is designed to provide in-depth expertise in the discipline of sport management while it concurrently provides students with a broader, global business perspective. Such perspective is essential to operating in today’s increasing complex multi-national business context. The program ensures students have a proficiency in a second language, enhanced socio-cultural awareness and a robust study abroad experience. Today’s business climate is marked by fluid and interconnected financial markets, widely available technological advancements that increase global connectivity, increased international trade, and the emergence of vibrant growing economies in what were formerly considered third world countries. Increased globalization has necessitated that managers have a broad, holistic perspective that incorporates the diverse components of an international business degree. Such a degree will become increasingly valuable as the trends associated with 21st century commerce progress.

• Students will evaluate how the cultural and legal differences between the country in which they studied abroad and the U.S. would impact how they operate in that country.

The University is one of only two schools in New England – and 21 in the country – to earn this distinction.

While just about everyone knows how to use a computer, the computer scientist understands how the transfer of information from a computer to a human actually works. Possessing great powers in abstract thinking, they model and analyze computing problems and then design the practical solutions to them. Algorithms? It’s the computer scientist who creates them.

Our Cybersecurity and Networks program prepares you for these careers with a combination of practical skills and cutting-edge knowledge, leading you to success as an Information Security Analyst, Digital Forensic Examiner, Network Engineer, or System Administrator — to name just a few of your possible career titles.

There are two versions to the program. One version is for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field, while the other is for those with no prior education in these areas. Those coming to the program without this education simply complete a set of four additional bridge courses on the topics of programming and computer systems. These will help you transition from your previous background to a level of readiness that enables you to successfully pursue the rest of the degree program.

A Serious Project Prepares You for the Real World of Cybersecurity and Networks

You will complete a substantial project that will demonstrate your level of expertise and professionalism so that you can hit the ground running when you land that coveted position in your chosen area. There are three ways to satisfy the project requirement: a thesis for which research would be done; taking a course in which a significant project occurs; or taking a separate course specifically dedicated to a project.

One of only a small number of such programs in the United States, our master’s program in fire and explosion investigation offers 39 credits* of interdisciplinary coursework in fire/arson investigation, emergency management, public safety, and more. Students in the program study alongside leading professionals in the fire service including current and former fire and police chiefs, homeland security executives, private investigators, and insurance agents. Successful alumni have moved on to leadership positions in local fire departments, state and federal emergency agencies, and private firms.

Students take required courses in topics such as the chemistry of fires, dynamics of structural fires, and arson analysis. Candidates will also chose from a series of electives that explores issues, including fire and building codes, fire scene reconstruction, terrorism, and industrial fire protection.
