Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The 12-credit general concentration allows students to select from a set of courses related to the field of clinical mental health counseling, including courses available in the other concentrations.

Program Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate competence in all 8 core domains of counseling, as well as the concentration of clinical mental health counseling.
  • Students successfully synthesize major theoretical concepts in the core counseling curriculum and their concentration area with their practicum experience.
  • Students demonstrate, at a professional level, applied intervention skills in the internship.

The objective of the Master of Science in Accounting program is to provide an in-depth framework for corporate, accounting analytics, and taxation accounting inquiry, devised in structure and content from the entire scope and process of accounting-information-based economic decision-making. The Bachelor of Science in National Security is designed to prepare students to enter the important areas of employment associated with the national security infrastructure of the United States. Graduates of this program will understand the nature and scope of the various national security agencies, the national security strategy, and the connections between the nation’s national security strategy and the policies developed to help ensure our nation’s security. Students in this concentration learn to use the tools and skills employed in the Intelligence Community (IC); develop the analytical foundations to be able to analyze alternative threats to security; to map and model threats using geospatial analysis; and the laws, ethics, and regulations that structure national security operations.

  • Develop a working knowledge of the most prominent features of the global national security construct with an emphasis on the United States’ (U.S.) national security enterprise and its U.S. Constitutional roots.

The Master of Science in Human Resources is designed to prepare professionals to advance their careers in the field of human resources. The program emphasizes the strategic role that human resources plays in the achievement of a firm’s competitive strategy, while providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to be effective human resource leaders. Specific focus will be on the emerging set of human resource competencies and skills needed to navigate the evolving human resources field including globalization, diversity and inclusion, corporate social responsibility, and strategic leadership.

Students will examine each of the major human resources functional areas including recruitment and selection, compensation and benefits, performance management, employee relations, change management, and learning and development. Students will also learn about key human resource processes, human resource analytics, and the set of skills needed to be a strategic business partner with an organization’s business lines and other enabling functions.

This program requires 36 graduate credits: 21 credits from core courses, 12 credits from one of three concentrations, and 3 credits from a restricted elective.

Within each program option described above, students may concentrate in industrial-human resources, organizational development, or conflict management. A concentration requires 12 credits of electives, which are counted as part of the 21 credits required in the elective option (Thesis, Internship/Practicum, or Approved Electives) selected by the student. If a concentration is selected, the student must notify the program coordinator as well as the Registrar. A concentration is not required if the student’s educational or career goals can best be met without this specialization.

Program Outcomes

  • Students will master theory and techniques related to core areas of industrial-organizational psychology including talent identification and development, work motivation, training, human capital practices, organization and group behavior.
  • Students will learn how to employ the knowledge gained through their classes to the workplace through supervised experiential learning opportunities such as internships, practicum, case studies, and applied research projects.
  • Students will conduct applied organizational research and interpret research used to make business decisions.

A total of 45 credits is required of candidates for the master of arts degree in industrial/organizational psychology. Candidates for this degree must complete 24 credits of basic program requirements. Another 21 credits (including concentrations, program options, and electives) are chosen after consultation with the program coordinator in light of the student’s academic and professional goals. Students may not complete more than nine credits of electives until they have satisfied the basic requirements. Up to nine credits of electives may be taken in other departments, such as industrial engineering, economics, management, marketing, and public administration.

As an occupation, we find its fundamental principles are most often applied in the world of business, although not exclusively. Economics also prepares students for careers in fields as diverse as government service, law, and non-governmental institutions. Importantly, the economics degree offers outstanding preparation for graduate and professional programs.

The University of New Haven’s undergraduate program in economics provides students with the analytical and technical skills that are valued by employers. We place considerable emphasis on providing our students with the wide array of practical skills and acquired intelligence necessary to respond to a changing natural and human environment. Our graduates bring a high degree of critical thinking, solid writing, and presentations skills to their employment field of choice. They are well-adapted, attentive, and prepared to respond to the inevitability of surprise, spontaneity, and innovation.

In addition to the General Education requirements, the B.A. Economics requires 33 credits. The 33-credit program is comprised of 24 credits of courses required for all B.A. Economics majors and 9 credits from one of two concentrations. The Behavioral Economics concentration entails taking a series of more specialized economics courses leading towards the Behavioral Economics focus. Alternatively, a student can choose to retain a more general and broader overview of Economics through the General Economics concentration
